CHAPTER 11 THE MAN WHO CREATED BLUEBIRD

The helicopter disappeared into the night.

Daniel stood motionless beneath the warehouse lights, the silver locket still clenched in his hand.

Inside it, four words refused to leave his mind.

Trust no Blackwood.

Ava stared into the empty sky.

For thirty-two years she had searched for answers without knowing she was searching.

Now she had found her sister...

Only to lose her again three minutes later.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I couldn't even hug her."

Daniel wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"You will."

"How do you know?"

"Because I'm done letting Victor decide how this story ends."

Two Hours Later

Federal agents filled the warehouse.

Crime scene photographers documented every inch of concrete.

Marcus supervised the evidence team while Charles sat alone inside an ambulance, receiving treatment for the cuts on his face.

Evelyn arrived under police escort despite her doctor's orders.

The bullet had passed through her shoulder.

She looked exhausted.

The moment she saw Daniel, she noticed the locket in his hand.

"You found it."

Daniel turned slowly.

"You recognize it?"

Evelyn nodded.

"I bought those lockets."

Rachel looked stunned.

"You what?"

"I never told Charles."

Silence fell over everyone.

Rachel stepped forward.

"You said Samuel bought them."

"I lied."

Ava stared at Evelyn.

"Why?"

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"Because I felt guilty."

"Guilty for what?"

"For destroying your father's career."

Rachel shook her head.

"You hated Samuel."

"I admired him first."

No one expected that answer.

Evelyn continued.

"Samuel was the only engineer who ever told Charles he was wrong."

Charles looked at the floor.

"He was right more often than I was."

"I respected him."

Evelyn smiled bitterly.

"Then I became jealous."

Daniel sighed.

"So the whole nightmare began because of pride."

"No."

Everyone looked toward Marcus.

He held another evidence box.

"It began long before Samuel."

The Hidden Safe

One of the FBI technicians approached Marcus.

"We found another compartment."

"Where?"

"Under Victor's office floor."

Marcus immediately followed.

Daniel, Ava, Rachel, Charles, and Evelyn went with him.

The false concrete slab required three men to lift.

Beneath it sat a heavy steel safe.

Unlike Victor's other equipment...

This one carried no fingerprints.

Only a faded brass nameplate.

PROPERTY OF DR. LEONARD GRAVES

Marcus carefully opened it.

Inside were old videotapes.

Medical files.

Photographs.

And one thick leather journal.

Daniel picked it up.

The first page read:

Project Bluebird

Confidential Research Log

Ava frowned.

"Research?"

Marcus turned several pages.

His expression changed instantly.

"This wasn't an adoption program."

"What was it?" Daniel asked.

Marcus swallowed.

"It was a witness protection experiment."

Everyone stared.

Charles frowned.

"That's impossible."

Marcus continued reading.

"Children connected to major corporate crimes were secretly relocated under new identities."

Rachel felt sick.

"You mean..."

"They weren't kidnapped to sell."

"They were hidden."

Ava looked at Marcus.

"From whom?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"Whoever murdered their parents."

A Forgotten Recording

Another videotape was labeled:

Interview – Samuel Bennett

Marcus inserted it into an evidence player.

The screen flickered.

Samuel appeared.

He looked exhausted.

Across from him sat Dr. Leonard Graves.

Samuel spoke first.

"If anything happens to me..."

Dr. Graves interrupted.

"It already has."

Samuel nodded.

"I know."

The doctor leaned forward.

"Your daughters are no longer safe."

Samuel closed his eyes.

"I'll protect them."

"You can't."

"I have to."

Graves shook his head.

"No."

"You'll protect one."

"The system will protect the other."

Rachel covered her mouth.

Samuel looked directly into the camera.

"If Ava ever learns the truth..."

His voice broke.

"...tell her I never abandoned either of them."

Ava burst into tears.

Daniel immediately took her hand.

Samuel continued.

"I chose this because keeping them together would have killed them both."

The recording suddenly skipped.

Static filled the room.

Then one final sentence.

"Never let Victor know who received Bluebird."

The tape ended.

Everyone looked at one another.

Rachel whispered,

"So Victor spent thirty-two years looking for the wrong daughter."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"He thought Ava was Bluebird."

Charles frowned.

"Then who was?"

Nobody answered.

Because no one knew.

The DNA Results

A young FBI forensic analyst hurried into the room carrying fresh reports.

"Director."

Marcus accepted the envelope.

"What is it?"

"The DNA comparisons."

Ava looked up.

"So it's confirmed?"

Marcus opened the report.

"Yes."

He smiled for the first time all day.

"Ava and Emily are biological sisters."

Rachel sobbed quietly.

Charles closed his eyes in relief.

Daniel squeezed Ava's hand.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

"There are two more comparisons."

Daniel frowned.

"What comparisons?"

"The blood recovered from Victor's hideout."

Marcus slowly read the first page.

"Charles Blackwood..."

He looked up.

"...is not Daniel's biological father."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Daniel blinked once.

Then again.

"What?"

Marcus looked at the report.

"We repeated the test three times."

Charles stared at him.

"That's impossible."

Evelyn's face drained of color.

Marcus continued.

"There is zero probability."

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

She couldn't meet his eyes.

Daniel's voice barely worked.

"Mom..."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I..."

Her lips trembled.

"I never wanted you to find out like this."

Daniel stepped backward.

"No."

Charles looked just as shocked.

"Evelyn..."

She began crying.

"I was twenty-three."

"No."

"I made one mistake."

Daniel felt the room spinning.

"Who?"

Evelyn whispered,

"I don't know."

Charles stared at her.

"You don't know?"

"It happened once."

Daniel could hardly breathe.

Everything he believed about his family...

His name...

His inheritance...

His identity...

Collapsed in seconds.

Marcus quietly closed the folder.

"There is one final result."

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked directly at Daniel.

"The unidentified male DNA..."

He hesitated.

"...matches someone already in our database."

Daniel slowly lifted his head.

"Who?"

Marcus turned the final page.

His expression became unreadable.

He whispered one name.

"Victor Hale."

The room exploded.

Charles lunged forward.

"You lying son of—"

Marcus raised a hand immediately.

"Wait."

Everyone froze.

Marcus pointed to the report.

"The match isn't listed as father."

Daniel frowned.

"Then what?"

Marcus answered slowly.

"It identifies Victor Hale..."

"...as Daniel's biological uncle."

Every face in the room turned toward Charles.

Charles stopped moving.

His hands began shaking uncontrollably.

Daniel stared at him.

"You knew."

Charles didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

"You knew."

Finally...

Charles whispered,

"Victor..."

His voice cracked.

"...is my older brother."

The room fell silent once again.

Ava slowly looked from Charles...

...to Victor's abandoned journal.

Everything suddenly made horrifying sense.

Victor hadn't spent thirty-two years destroying the Blackwoods because he wanted money.

He wanted the family itself.

And if Victor was Charles's brother...

Then the war that had destroyed Samuel Bennett...

Separated two sisters...

Poisoned Charles...

Manipulated Evelyn...

And nearly killed Ava...

Had actually begun decades earlier...

May you like

Inside the Blackwood family itself.
