CHAPTER 12 THE BROTHER WHO STOLE AN ENTIRE LIFE

The room fell into complete silence.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Only the steady hum of the fluorescent lights filled the FBI evidence room.

Daniel looked at Charles.

Then at Evelyn.

Then back to Marcus.

Finally, he broke the silence.

"So Victor is my uncle."

Marcus nodded.

"According to the DNA database... yes."

Daniel laughed once.

It wasn't humor.

It was disbelief.

"So the man who kidnapped my wife's sister..."

"...poisoned my father..."

"...destroyed Ava's family..."

"...and manipulated my mother..."

"...is actually part of my own bloodline."

Charles lowered his head.

"Yes."

Daniel clenched his fists.

"And you never told me."

Charles looked up with tears in his eyes.

"I believed Victor died twenty-nine years ago."

Marcus immediately shook his head.

"That's not true."

Everyone turned.

Marcus opened another file recovered from Victor's journal.

"It wasn't Victor who disappeared."

"It was Charles."

Charles frowned.

"What?"

Marcus laid several faded photographs across the table.

One showed two young boys.

Almost identical.

One smiled naturally.

The other looked straight into the camera without emotion.

"Victor and Charles."

Rachel studied them.

"They're twins."

Marcus nodded.

"Identical twins."

Daniel stared at the photographs.

"My father never told me."

Charles smiled bitterly.

"Our father forbade anyone from talking about Victor."

"Why?"

Marcus answered.

"Because Victor was supposed to inherit Blackwood Industries."

Daniel looked confused.

"I thought Charles was older."

"He wasn't."

Marcus turned another page.

"Victor was born first."

Everyone looked at him.

"He was the legal heir."

Charles slowly sat down.

"I haven't heard that word in thirty-five years."

Marcus continued.

"The Blackwood board believed Victor lacked emotional stability."

Charles closed his eyes.

"They were right."

"They quietly transferred control to Charles."

Rachel whispered,

"They chose the younger twin."

Marcus nodded.

"They believed Victor would eventually destroy the company."

Daniel looked toward Charles.

"And instead..."

Charles finished the sentence.

"...he decided to destroy us."

A Brother's Confession

Charles asked everyone to leave except Daniel.

The room emptied.

Father and son sat across from one another.

For several minutes...

Neither spoke.

Finally Daniel asked,

"When was the last time you saw him before all this?"

Charles answered immediately.

"The night our father changed the will."

Daniel remained silent.

Charles continued.

"Victor smiled."

"That's all?"

"He congratulated me."

Daniel frowned.

"Really?"

Charles laughed sadly.

"I believed him."

"What happened after that?"

Charles looked toward the window.

"I woke up in the hospital."

Daniel's expression changed.

"What?"

"My car had gone off a bridge."

"You never told anyone."

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

Charles slowly rolled up his sleeve.

A long scar ran from his shoulder to his elbow.

"He cut the brake lines."

Daniel stared.

"He tried to kill you?"

Charles nodded.

"I survived."

"What about Victor?"

"He disappeared."

Daniel took a slow breath.

"So this war..."

"...started before I was born."

Charles nodded again.

"Long before."

Ava Finds Emily's Journal

Across the hall...

Ava sat alone with the evidence collected from Warehouse 18.

She wasn't looking for clues anymore.

She simply wanted to feel close to the sister she had only met for three minutes.

Inside Emily's abandoned handbag...

She found a small notebook.

The first page read:

Private.

Ava hesitated.

Then opened it.

The first entries were ordinary.

Work schedules.

Shopping lists.

Books she wanted to read.

Then...

An entry from six years earlier.

Today I met a little girl at Samuel Bennett's grave.

She looked exactly like me.

She smiled at me.

I almost spoke.

But something told me not to.

Ava stopped breathing.

That day.

She remembered it perfectly.

She had felt strangely familiar standing beside the unknown woman.

She turned another page.

I've dreamed about the same woman since I was twelve.

We always stand beside the same lake.

She always turns around before I see her face.

Another page.

My adoptive father told me dreams don't matter.

But why do I wake up crying every birthday?

Another.

Sometimes I think someone is missing.

Not someone I lost...

Someone I was born with.

Ava couldn't stop crying.

Emily had been searching too.

Without ever knowing what she had lost.

Evelyn's Choice

At the hospital chapel...

Evelyn sat alone.

No lawyers.

No assistants.

No security.

Just silence.

The chapel door opened.

Rachel entered.

Neither woman smiled.

Rachel sat beside her.

"I never imagined we'd end up here."

Evelyn nodded.

"I did."

Rachel looked surprised.

"You expected this?"

"I expected judgment."

Rachel folded her hands.

"You deserve prison."

"I know."

"You threatened my husband."

"I know."

"You terrorized my daughter."

"I know."

"You almost destroyed her marriage."

"I know."

Rachel waited.

Then quietly asked,

"Do you regret any of it?"

Evelyn answered without hesitation.

"Every morning."

Rachel studied her face carefully.

For the first time...

She believed her.

Not because Evelyn cried.

Not because she apologized.

Because she finally stopped defending herself.

Marcus Makes One More Discovery

Late that night...

Marcus called Daniel.

"I think Victor left us another message."

Daniel hurried into the evidence lab.

Marcus pointed toward the recovered journal.

"I noticed every tenth page had been glued together."

He carefully separated them.

Inside...

A folded city map.

One location had been circled repeatedly.

An old orphanage.

Closed twenty-four years earlier.

Daniel frowned.

"Why would Victor care about an orphanage?"

Marcus handed him another document.

"It wasn't an orphanage."

"What was it?"

"A Blackwood-owned witness relocation center."

Daniel felt another chill.

"Project Bluebird."

Marcus nodded.

"It started there."

Daniel looked at the address.

He recognized it immediately.

"That's impossible."

Marcus looked up.

"You've been there?"

Daniel slowly nodded.

"I donated the property five years ago."

Silence.

Marcus whispered,

"Victor kept using it..."

"...while you believed it was abandoned."

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

"SWAT."

Marcus was already dialing.

"I've got them moving."

Before either man could leave...

The lights inside the evidence lab suddenly went out.

Emergency power activated seconds later.

Red lights flooded the room.

Every computer screen shut down.

Marcus checked his radio.

Nothing.

No signal.

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

A slow clap echoed through the darkness.

One.

Two.

Three.

A familiar voice spoke from somewhere beyond the red emergency lights.

"Good evening, nephew."

Daniel froze.

Victor Hale stepped into the corridor.

Alone.

Unarmed.

Smiling.

"I thought I'd save you the trip."

Marcus immediately reached for his sidearm.

Victor calmly raised both hands.

"I'm not here to fight."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Then why are you here?"

Victor looked directly at him.

"To tell you the one lie Charles still hasn't admitted."

Charles appeared at the far end of the hallway.

His face went pale the instant he saw Victor.

Victor smiled at his twin brother.

"Hello, Charles."

Charles whispered,

"You should have stayed hidden."

Victor laughed.

"You first."

Then Victor slowly turned back toward Daniel.

"I didn't steal your life."

Daniel stared at him.

Victor pointed directly at Charles.

"He did."

The emergency lights flickered.

And before anyone could react...

Every fire alarm in the building activated at once.

Doors slammed into automatic lockdown.

Steel security shutters dropped over every exit.

The FBI field office was sealed from the inside.

And somewhere above them...

A woman's terrified scream echoed through the building.

May you like

Ava.
