CHAPTER 13 THE WOMAN WHO REMEMBERED EVERYTHING

The scream echoed through the FBI building.
"Ava!"
Daniel spun toward the stairwell before anyone else moved.
Marcus shouted into his radio.
"All units, report!"
Only static answered.
The emergency communication system was dead.
Victor smiled calmly.
"I told you..."
"...I didn't come here to fight."
Daniel grabbed Victor by the collar and slammed him against the wall.
"If she gets hurt—"
Victor didn't resist.
"You still think this is about hurting Ava."
Daniel's voice shook with rage.
"It isn't?"
Victor looked directly into his eyes.
"No."
"It's about protecting the only witness still alive."
Daniel froze.
"What witness?"
Victor slowly turned his head toward the upper floors.
"Ava."
The Locked Floor
Daniel and Marcus reached the fourth floor seconds later.
The steel security doors had sealed automatically.
Smoke from the emergency fire suppression system drifted through the hallway.
Agents worked frantically to override the electronic locks.
Daniel pounded against the door.
"Ava!"
No answer.
Marcus plugged a portable override device into the control panel.
"It'll take ninety seconds."
"We don't have ninety seconds."
Charles arrived, breathing heavily.
He stared at the sealed door.
"This wasn't Victor."
Daniel looked at him.
"What?"
Charles pointed toward the security keypad.
"These are Blackwood executive lockdown protocols."
Marcus immediately understood.
"They're internal."
Charles nodded.
"Only four people ever had authorization."
Marcus listed them aloud.
"You."
"Evelyn."
"Daniel."
"And..."
Charles finished quietly.
"...the Chairman of the Board."
Daniel frowned.
"There is no Chairman."
Charles looked directly at him.
"There wasn't."
A cold silence settled over the hallway.
Marcus slowly turned toward Victor, who remained under guard downstairs.
"So who activated it?"
Charles whispered one name.
"Richard Blackwood."
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
"My grandfather."
Charles slowly nodded.
"He's alive."
Upstairs
Inside the locked conference room...
Ava stood with Rachel and two FBI agents.
The scream hadn't been hers.
It had come from a young forensic analyst who had discovered someone hiding in the ventilation system.
The man wore a maintenance uniform.
He was already unconscious.
Rachel stared at him.
"I know him."
Marcus spoke through the partially restored intercom.
"Who is he?"
Rachel's voice trembled.
"He worked at the hospital."
Daniel looked through the reinforced glass.
"The night the twins disappeared?"
Rachel nodded.
"He was one of Victor's assistants."
The unconscious man slowly opened his eyes.
He looked around.
Then smiled.
"You finally found me."
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
"Who are you?"
"My name..."
The man coughed.
"...is Owen Graves."
Charles stiffened.
"Graves?"
"The son of Dr. Leonard Graves."
Everyone in the hallway went silent.
Owen laughed weakly.
"My father created Bluebird."
Marcus unlocked the door at last.
Agents rushed inside.
Daniel reached Ava first.
He wrapped both arms around her.
She hugged him tightly.
"I'm okay."
He closed his eyes.
For the first time in hours...
He believed it.
Owen's Story
Minutes later, Owen sat handcuffed inside an interview room.
He looked exhausted.
Not frightened.
Just tired.
Marcus switched on the recorder.
"State your name."
"Owen Graves."
"Occupation."
"I've spent thirty years cleaning up my father's mistakes."
Daniel folded his arms.
"You expect us to believe that?"
Owen shrugged.
"You don't have to."
Marcus placed Samuel's journal on the table.
"Then explain Bluebird."
Owen looked at the worn leather cover.
"My father never intended to create a kidnapping program."
Rachel frowned.
"What?"
"He was ordered to."
"By Victor?"
Owen slowly shook his head.
"No."
Charles stared at him.
"Then who?"
Owen looked toward the ceiling.
"As a child..."
"...I was taught one rule."
He smiled bitterly.
"When Richard Blackwood gives an order..."
"...everyone obeys."
Daniel felt his heartbeat stop.
"My grandfather."
Owen nodded.
"He financed Project Bluebird."
Richard's Reason
Marcus leaned forward.
"Why?"
Owen sighed.
"You've been asking the wrong question for thirty-two years."
"What do you mean?"
"You keep asking who stole the children."
"No."
"The real question is..."
"...why did Richard need children to disappear?"
Silence.
Owen looked at Ava.
"Because witnesses grow up."
Daniel frowned.
"Witnesses to what?"
Owen reached into his jacket.
Agents immediately drew their weapons.
"Easy."
He slowly removed an old cassette tape.
"I've carried this since I was nineteen."
Marcus accepted it carefully.
The label had almost faded.
Only three handwritten words remained.
Board Meeting – Private
Date:
Thirty-three years earlier.
One year before Ava and Emily were born.
Marcus inserted the tape.
The recording crackled.
Several male voices filled the room.
Most were impossible to identify.
Then...
Richard Blackwood spoke.
His voice was calm.
Confident.
Authoritative.
"The construction defects cannot become public."
Another voice answered.
"Samuel Bennett will report them."
Richard replied.
"Then Samuel Bennett will lose his credibility."
Charles closed his eyes.
He recognized his father's voice immediately.
The recording continued.
Another director asked,
"What if he refuses?"
Richard answered without emotion.
"Then we remove him."
Rachel covered her mouth.
Ava's eyes filled with tears.
Daniel couldn't breathe.
Samuel had been marked for destruction...
Before Ava was even born.
A Second Voice
The tape continued.
Another familiar voice entered the discussion.
Not Richard.
Not Charles.
Not Victor.
Marcus immediately looked toward Evelyn.
She looked horrified.
"I've never heard this."
The man on the tape spoke calmly.
"Children complicate legal proceedings."
Rachel froze.
Owen closed his eyes.
"My father."
Dr. Leonard Graves.
The doctor continued.
"If necessary..."
"...they should disappear with new identities."
The room fell silent.
Bluebird hadn't started as protection.
It had started...
As a contingency plan.
A way to erase witnesses.
Charles whispered,
"My God..."
Evelyn Finally Speaks
Everyone turned toward Evelyn.
She had listened without interrupting.
Without defending herself.
She looked twenty years older than she had that morning.
"I knew about the defective steel."
She spoke quietly.
"I knew Richard manipulated board members."
She looked at Daniel.
"But I swear to you..."
"I never knew children were part of his plan."
Daniel believed her.
Not because she was his mother.
Because the horror on her face couldn't be faked.
Ava stepped closer.
"Then help us."
Evelyn looked at her.
"With what?"
"Bring him down."
Evelyn didn't hesitate.
"I will."
The Final Page
Marcus received another message from the forensic lab.
"We restored one deleted page from Victor's journal."
Everyone gathered around.
The page contained only one paragraph.
No names.
No dates.
Just a handwritten warning.
If Richard Blackwood dies before he confesses...
The location of Bluebird Archive dies with him.
Every original identity.
Every stolen child.
Every hidden witness.
Gone forever.
Daniel slowly looked around the room.
Rachel.
Charles.
Evelyn.
Marcus.
Ava.
Emily was still missing.
Richard Blackwood was alive.
And somewhere...
There was an archive containing the real identities of dozens of children whose lives had been stolen.
Marcus quietly closed the journal.
"We're no longer investigating one murder."
Daniel nodded.
"We're investigating an entire generation."
Before anyone could speak again...
An FBI technician burst through the door.
"Director!"
Marcus turned.
"What happened?"
"We just identified Richard Blackwood's current residence."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Where?"
The technician swallowed.
"He isn't hiding overseas."
Marcus frowned.
"Then where is he?"
The technician slowly looked at Daniel.
"He has been living..."
"...inside Blackwood Manor."
Every face turned toward Charles.
Charles whispered in disbelief,
"That's impossible."
The technician shook his head.
"We found architectural plans."
He spread them across the table.
Beneath the oldest section of the family mansion...
There was an entire underground level.
One that appeared on no public record.
One final room had been highlighted in red.
Its label read:
