Chapter 9 - MICHAEL'S ACCIDENT

Michael Bennett died on a wet highway outside Baltimore.
A truck crossed the center line.
Michael swerved.
His car went through a guardrail.
Police called it a tragic accident.
Claire had believed that for three years.
Detective Torres reopened the report.
The truck driver had disappeared shortly after the crash.
No charges were filed.
But there was something strange.
Michael's brake lines showed damage.
Investigators had blamed the crash.
A new forensic review suggested otherwise.
The damage might have occurred before impact.
Claire sat frozen.
“Are you saying someone killed my husband?”
Torres chose her words carefully.
“I'm saying we can no longer confidently call it an accident.”
Claire felt Lily grab her hand.
Then came the financial connection.
Three days before Michael died, someone paid the truck driver's gambling debt.
$42,000.
The payment came from a company.
Vale Consulting.
Margaret's company.
Claire stood.
“No.”
Torres continued.
“Michael had also been investigating Hawthorne.”
Claire stared.
“What?”
“He represented a client whose mother lost control of her estate after being committed there.”
Claire remembered.
Michael had been an attorney.
He rarely discussed confidential cases.
But months before his death, he had mentioned something.
A private facility.
A family fighting over guardianship.
He had said, “Sometimes the paperwork is the weapon.”
Claire had forgotten those words.
Now they came back like a scream.
Michael had gotten too close.
Margaret needed him gone.
But after his death, another opportunity appeared.
Claire.
The widow.
The house.
The trust.
The insurance.
And most importantly, access to Michael's remaining files.
Daniel hadn't targeted Claire merely for money.
He had been looking for whatever evidence Michael had hidden before his death.
Claire whispered, “That's why he needed the house.”
Torres nodded.
“He searched it constantly.”
Claire remembered Daniel renovating the basement.
Replacing shelves.
Opening walls.
Offering to organize Michael's office.
He had been searching.
For two years.
“Did he find it?”
“We don't know.”
Lily suddenly stood.
“Daddy's box.”
Claire turned.
“What box?”
“The one in the attic.”
Claire stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Lily explained.
When she was six, she had found an old metal box behind Christmas decorations.
Michael's initials were scratched into the side.
Daniel had entered the attic before she could open it.
He had told her it contained old tax records.
“Where is it now?”
“I moved it.”
Claire blinked.
“You moved it?”
Lily nodded.
“Daniel told me not to touch it.”
“So you moved it?”
“He was mean.”
Despite everything, Rachel almost laughed.
“Where?”
Lily looked at her mother.
“In Daddy's old treehouse.”
They drove there with police.
Michael had built the treehouse for Lily before his death.
Under one floorboard was the metal box.
Inside were financial records.
Patient names.
Payments to Warren.
Payments from Margaret.
And a flash drive.
Torres inserted it into a secured laptop.
One video file appeared.
Michael Bennett sat in his office.
Alive.
Claire covered her mouth.
Michael looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, something happened to me.”
Claire began crying.

Then Michael said the words that would finally expose everything.
“The woman running this operation is Margaret Mercer.”
