Chapter 5 - WHAT WAS IN THE TEA

The laboratory results arrived two days later.

Claire's tea contained a prescription sedative.

Not enough to kill her.

Enough to make her dizzy.

Forgetful.

Confused.

Enough to create symptoms.

Daniel had been manufacturing evidence.

Rachel stared at the report.

“He was drugging you.”

Claire couldn't speak.

She remembered every cup.

Every night Daniel had smiled and carried the mug toward her.

“You look exhausted.”

“Drink this.”

“You need rest.”

He had kissed her forehead while poisoning her credibility.

Claire ran to the bathroom and vomited.

Lily waited outside.

When Claire came out, her daughter looked terrified.

“Mom?”

Claire hugged her.

“I should've known.”

“No.”

“I should've listened sooner.”

Lily started crying.

“I tried to tell you.”

“I know.”

“But you loved him.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Did you love him more than me?”

The question broke something inside her.

Claire pulled back.

“Never.”

“But he said—”

“He lied.”

Claire held Lily's face.

“Listen to me.”

Lily looked at her.

“No man will ever make me choose between you and him.”

Tears rolled down Lily's cheeks.

“And if anyone ever makes you feel afraid, you tell me.”

“What if you don't believe me?”

Claire swallowed.

“Then tell me again.”

She kissed her forehead.

“Tell me until I do.”

That afternoon, Detective Torres called.

They had found Melissa Grant.

Alive.

Living under another name in Oregon.

And she was willing to talk.

The video call lasted twenty-three minutes.

Melissa appeared nervous.

She kept looking toward her window.

Then she saw Claire.

“You were going to marry him?”

Claire nodded.

Melissa covered her mouth.

“You have a child?”

“Yes.”

“How old?”

“Eight.”

Melissa began crying.

Claire waited.

Finally, Melissa whispered, “I was pregnant.”

Claire's heart stopped.

“When?”

“When Daniel had me committed.”

Melissa explained.

She had discovered Daniel moving money from her company.

When she confronted him, he told everyone she was having a breakdown.

He had already spent months building the story.

Doctors.

Medication.

Witness statements.

Fabricated incidents.

Then one night, she woke inside Hawthorne Behavioral Health Center.

Daniel controlled her phone.

Her accounts.

Her medical decisions.

Everything.

“What happened to the baby?” Claire asked.

Melissa looked down.

“I lost her.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I'm sorry.”

Melissa wiped her face.

“Daniel visited me the next day.”

“What did he say?”

Melissa looked directly into the camera.

“He said now there was nothing standing between him and my money.”

Claire felt sick.

Then Melissa asked, “Did he give you vitamins?”

Claire stared.

“Yes.”

“Throw them away.”

“Why?”

Melissa's face hardened.

“Because the tea was only step one.”

Claire remembered the bottles police had taken.

“What was step two?”

May you like

Melissa whispered.

“Making you sick enough that nobody questioned why you disappeared.”
