Chapter 13 - MICHAEL'S FINAL SECRET
The final file was encrypted.
Federal investigators cracked it two days later.
Claire sat beside Thomas Reed when they opened it.
Inside was a document Michael had written three days before his death.
Claire read silently.
Then she stopped.
Michael had known he might die.
So he had changed the trust.
Not simply to protect Lily.
To protect Claire from herself.
Or more accurately, from anyone who might gain control over her.
Michael had created a hidden safeguard.
If Claire remarried and attempted to transfer the trust within five years, all assets would automatically move into an independent protective structure for Lily.
Daniel could never have taken the trust.
Margaret didn't know.
Neither did Daniel.
Michael had anticipated them.
But there was more.
Michael had also purchased a life insurance policy.
Not on himself.
On Claire.
Claire stared.
“Why?”
Thomas continued reading.
The beneficiary wasn't Michael.
It wasn't Lily.
It was a foundation established to support victims of fraudulent guardianship.
Claire began crying.
Michael had been preparing for war.
He had simply died before he could fight it.
Then Thomas opened the final video.
Michael appeared tired.
“Claire.”
She covered her mouth.
“If you're seeing this, I failed to come home.”
Tears blurred her vision.
“I need you to know something.”
Michael looked directly into the camera.
“None of this was your responsibility.”
Claire broke.
Lily took her hand.
Michael continued.
“If they ever come near you, don't try to be polite.”
A tiny smile crossed his face.
“Don't try to understand them.”
“Protect Lily.”
Claire sobbed.
“And trust her.”
Claire looked at her daughter.
Michael's final words came softly.
“She notices more than we do.”
The video ended.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then Lily whispered, “Daddy knew.”
Claire hugged her.
“Yes.”
“He knew I'd protect you?”
Claire kissed her hair.
“I think he knew we'd protect each other.”
Outside the room, Torres waited.
Margaret had been formally charged.
Kidnapping.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Attempted aggravated assault.
Additional homicide investigations were underway.
Dr. Warren had agreed to testify.
Daniel had also agreed to cooperate.
But cooperation wouldn't erase his crimes.
He would still face prison.
Claire felt no satisfaction.
Only relief.
Then Torres handed her one final document.
“What is this?”
“Something recovered from Margaret's home.”
Claire opened it.
A list of names.
Dozens.
Some crossed out.
Some circled.
Claire's name was near the bottom.
Below hers was another name.
Rachel Bennett.
Claire looked up.
“She was going after my sister next?”
Torres nodded.
Claire stared at the list.
