Chapter 1 - THE SECOND RING

Claire had been walking for less than thirty seconds when she heard Lily scream.
“Mom!”
Claire spun around.
Daniel was standing at the end of the hallway.
His mother, Margaret, was beside him.
And the small velvet box was gone.
“Keep walking,” Claire whispered.
Lily tightened her fingers around her mother's hand.
Daniel hurried toward them.
“Claire, please.”
“Stay away from us.”
“You're making a mistake.”
Claire stopped.
“No, Daniel.”
Her voice was shaking, but she forced herself to look him directly in the eyes.
“The mistake was trusting you.”
Guests were spilling out of the ceremony hall now.
Some whispered.
Some held up phones.
Others simply stared.
Daniel glanced at them and lowered his voice.
“We shouldn't do this here.”
“You seemed perfectly comfortable grabbing my daughter here.”
“I didn't hurt her.”
Claire looked at the red mark across Lily's cheek.
“Then explain that.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“She was hysterical.”
Lily flinched.
Claire immediately stepped between them.
“She is eight.”
“She was trying to destroy our wedding.”
“She was trying to protect me.”
Daniel laughed once.
It wasn't a happy sound.
It was bitter.
“You really believe that?”
“I believe her.”
Those three words changed his face.
For two years, Claire had seen Daniel angry.
Frustrated.
Tired.
Jealous.
But she had never seen him look at her the way he did now.
Like she had become an obstacle.
Margaret stepped forward.
“Claire, everyone is emotional.”
Claire turned toward her.
“What was in the box?”
Margaret didn't blink.
“A family ring.”
“For whom?”
“My niece.”
“What niece?”
Silence.
Claire felt Lily move closer.
Daniel stepped between the women.
“Enough.”
Claire stared at him.
“Whose ring was it?”
“It's none of your business.”
“I was supposed to become your wife five minutes ago.”
Daniel said nothing.
Claire nodded slowly.
“Exactly.”
She turned away.
Daniel grabbed her arm.
Lily screamed.
Claire ripped herself free.
“Don't touch me!”
Several guests stepped closer.
One of Claire's cousins raised his phone.
“Back off, Daniel.”
Daniel released her.
His eyes moved around the hallway.
He understood something Claire hadn't yet realized.
There were witnesses everywhere.
So he smiled.
Just like that.
The anger disappeared.
The charming Daniel returned.
“Claire.”
His voice softened.
“Go home.”
She stared at him.
“We'll talk tonight.”
“No.”
“Think about what you're doing.”
“I already have.”
“You're embarrassed.”
“No.”
“You're confused.”
“No.”
“Then you're being manipulated by a child.”
Lily lowered her head.
Claire felt rage rise through her chest.
“She is my child.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“And after today, I was supposed to be her father.”
Claire's eyes hardened.
“You'll never be her father.”
Daniel's smile finally died.
Claire walked away.
This time, nobody followed.
Outside, rain had begun falling over the hotel entrance.
Claire didn't care.
She pulled Lily against her body beneath the awning.
Her daughter was trembling.
“I'm sorry, Mommy.”
Claire stared down at her.
“For what?”
“For ruining your wedding.”
Claire dropped to her knees.
“No.”
She held Lily's face carefully.
“You didn't ruin anything.”
“But everybody was waiting.”
“I don't care.”
“You bought the dress.”
“I don't care.”
“You loved him.”
That one hurt.
Claire swallowed.
Then she kissed Lily's forehead.
“I love you more.”
Lily began crying.
Claire wrapped both arms around her.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Lily whispered something against her shoulder.
“There are more notes.”
Claire pulled back.
“What?”
“I didn't bring all of them.”
“Where are they?”
“At home.”
Claire's stomach tightened.
“Where?”
“In my room.”
“Daniel has a key to the house.”
Lily's face changed.
Claire immediately pulled out her phone.
She called her neighbor, Mrs. Harris.
No answer.
She called again.
Nothing.
Then Lily said quietly, “Mom?”
Claire looked at her.
“There was something else I heard.”
“What?”
“The night they talked about the wedding.”
Claire waited.
Lily's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Daniel asked his mom if the doctor had agreed.”
Claire froze.
“What doctor?”
“I don't know.”
“What exactly did he say?”
Lily closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“He said…”
She hesitated.
“He said, ‘Once she's my wife, nobody can stop me from signing it.’”
Claire's blood turned cold.
“Signing what?”
“I don't know.”
A car pulled up.
Claire's sister Rachel jumped out and rushed toward them.
“Claire!”
She hugged her.
“What happened?”
Claire looked back through the glass doors.
Daniel was standing inside.
Watching them.
Margaret stood beside him.
Claire couldn't hear what they were saying.
But she saw Margaret hand him something.
A key.
Daniel closed his fist around it.
Claire's stomach dropped.
“My house.”
Rachel frowned.
“What?”
Claire grabbed Lily's hand.
“We need to get home.”
They reached Rachel's car.
Claire looked back one final time.
Daniel was gone.
So was Margaret.
And for the first time since walking away from the altar, Claire understood something terrifying.

The wedding had been canceled.
But whatever Daniel had planned might not have been.
