Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO STOLE A DEAD BOY’S NAME

Evelyn stared at Nathan.

He didn’t move.

Neither did anyone else.

Rose stepped farther into the ballroom.

Her eyes never left him.

Victoria whispered,

“What the hell does that mean?”

Nathan looked at Evelyn.

“I can explain.”

She laughed once.

It contained no humor.

“Everybody keeps saying that.”

Rose shook her head.

“Don’t let him near you.”

Nathan ignored her.

“Evelyn.”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Evelyn’s voice was low.

“Is Nathan Cole your real name?”

Silence.

“Nathan.”

“No.”

The answer hit harder than she expected.

“How long have you been lying to me?”

He looked at her.

“Since the day we met.”

Evelyn’s eyes burned.

Victoria stepped beside her.

It was almost instinctive.

Nathan noticed.

“My real name is Samuel Vale.”

Evelyn froze.

“Vale?”

Alexander’s expression on the screen changed.

Rose whispered,

“Tell her the rest.”

Samuel looked toward Alexander.

Then back to Evelyn.

“I’m his son.”

The ballroom erupted again.

Evelyn stared at Alexander.

Then Samuel.

“My brother?”

Samuel shook his head.

“Half-brother.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

“Why wouldn’t there be another secret child?”

Samuel continued.

“My mother worked for Alexander.”

“He abandoned us when I was six.”

“Years later, I discovered what he had done to Margaret.”

“What he had done to you.”

Evelyn stared.

“So you changed your name.”

“Yes.”

“To help me?”

“At first.”

She heard the hesitation.

“At first?”

Samuel closed his eyes.

“I was supposed to watch you.”

Evelyn’s face went cold.

“For him.”

“Yes.”

Rose whispered,

“I knew it.”

Samuel turned.

“You knew nothing.”

“I recognized you.”

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell Evelyn?”

Rose’s face tightened.

“Because Alexander threatened her.”

Samuel laughed bitterly.

“He threatened everyone.”

Evelyn looked between them.

“Enough.”

Both stopped.

She pointed at Samuel.

“Did you ever give him information about me?”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

“How much?”

“Everything.”

Victoria whispered,

“Evelyn…”

Evelyn raised a hand.

Samuel continued.

“Where you lived.”

“Who you met.”

“What you were investigating.”

“When you discovered the hospital records.”

Evelyn felt physically sick.

“You were beside me.”

“Yes.”

“You helped me find those records.”

“Yes.”

“Then you told him every time I got closer.”

“Yes.”

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the ballroom.

Samuel didn’t react.

Evelyn stared at him.

“You let me trust you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Samuel looked at her.

“Because eventually I stopped working for him.”

Alexander laughed through the speakers.

“How touching.”

Samuel turned toward the screen.

“Shut up.”

Alexander’s smile vanished.

Samuel looked back at Evelyn.

“Three years ago, I stopped reporting.”

“Why?”

“Because I found out what he planned to do when you discovered the truth.”

Evelyn’s stomach tightened.

“What?”

Samuel looked at Alexander.

“He planned to kill you.”

Silence.

Alexander calmly adjusted his cuff.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

Samuel continued.

“That’s why I stayed.”

“That’s why I kept redirecting your investigation.”

“That’s why certain witnesses disappeared before you reached them.”

“You were protecting me?”

“I was trying.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“You were controlling me.”

Samuel had no answer.

Victoria looked at Evelyn.

“Sounds familiar.”

Evelyn looked at her.

Victoria nodded toward Charles.

“Our entire lives.”

For the first time, Evelyn understood something about Victoria she hadn’t wanted to understand.

Victoria had been raised inside a system where control was called love.

Power was called protection.

Cruelty was called strength.

That didn’t excuse her.

But it explained how she had become what Evelyn met that night.

Rose approached Evelyn.

“There’s more.”

Evelyn almost laughed.

“Of course there is.”

Rose reached inside her coat.

She removed an old envelope.

The paper was yellow.

Margaret’s handwriting was across the front.

FOR MY DAUGHTERS.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Rose held it out.

“Your mother gave me this the night before she died.”

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

“Because she told me not to.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“What?”

“She said only give it to you when both daughters are together.”

Victoria looked at Evelyn.

Rose continued.

“She knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That eventually Alexander would come back.”

Evelyn took the envelope.

Her hands shook.

Victoria stood beside her.

“Open it.”

Evelyn looked at her.

Then tore the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

And a key.

A small brass key.

Evelyn unfolded the letter.

My girls,

If you are reading this together, then the lie finally failed.

Evelyn stopped.

Victoria whispered,

“Keep going.”

She did.

I need you to understand one thing before anything else.

Neither of you was abandoned.

Neither of you was unwanted.

And neither of you belongs to Alexander Vale.

Evelyn looked up.

Victoria stared at her.

“What?”

She continued reading.

He will tell you blood gives him a claim.

It does not.

He will tell you the company belongs to him.

It does not.

He will tell you I betrayed him.

I did.

And I would do it again.

Because I discovered what he was building beneath Langley-Vale Properties.

Evelyn frowned.

Victoria leaned closer.

The next sentence made them both go still.

The company was never really about real estate.

It was a machine for hiding money, buying officials, destroying families, and taking property from people who could not fight back.

Charles helped him.

Diane helped him.

Robert helped him.

And for a time, so did I.

Victoria looked toward her parents.

Charles lowered his eyes.

Diane began crying.

Evelyn continued.

When I tried to expose them, Alexander decided my daughters would become insurance.

So I created insurance of my own.

The key opens Box 317 at Commonwealth Private Bank.

Inside is everything.

Not copies.

Originals.

Names.

Accounts.

Recordings.

And one document Alexander would destroy entire cities to possess.

Evelyn looked at the brass key.

Samuel stepped closer.

“What document?”

She read the final lines.

The document proving Alexander Vale does not own the Vale Trust.

My daughters do.

Half each.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Alexander’s image disappeared from the screen.

The security camera outside showed an empty hallway.

Marcus shouted,

“He’s gone.”

Samuel turned toward the doors.

“Where?”

Marcus checked the feeds.

“No visual.”

Evelyn looked down at the key.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

THANK YOU FOR FINDING THE KEY.

She looked toward the ballroom.

Someone inside had been watching them.

And suddenly Evelyn understood.

May you like

Alexander had never come to the hotel to confront her.

He had come to make her open Margaret’s letter.
