Chapter 2 - THE SIGNATURE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

The ballroom exploded into noise.

Some guests stood.

Others rushed closer to the screens.

Victoria remained motionless.

Her eyes were locked on Margaret Vale’s signature.

She looked at her father.

“What is that?”

Charles pulled free from the guards.

“Forgery.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“That was quick.”

“It’s fake.”

Charles pointed toward the screen.

“Everything she’s showing you is fabricated.”

Victoria looked relieved.

For approximately two seconds.

Then Evelyn touched the tablet beside the podium.

A second document appeared.

Then a third.

Then a fourth.

Bank records.

Property transfers.

Corporate filings.

Handwritten agreements.

Charles’s face grew paler with each image.

Evelyn spoke calmly.

“In 1993, Margaret Vale owned forty-nine percent of Langley-Vale Properties.”

“In 1994, she became pregnant.”

“Four months later, Charles convinced her to sign temporary voting authority while she recovered from complications.”

Charles shouted,

“That is not what happened!”

Evelyn continued.

“Six weeks after I was born, her ownership disappeared.”

Another document appeared.

A notarized transfer.

Victoria read the date.

Then frowned.

“Wait.”

She moved closer to the screen.

“That date…”

Charles stared at her.

Victoria looked at Evelyn.

“This says Margaret signed away her shares on October seventeenth.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

Evelyn’s voice became colder.

“My mother was unconscious in intensive care on October seventeenth.”

The whispers stopped.

Victoria looked at Charles.

He said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“She couldn’t hold a pen.”

“She couldn’t speak.”

“She couldn’t even breathe without assistance.”

“But somehow…”

Evelyn pointed toward the screen.

“…she walked into a law office twenty miles away and signed away a company worth hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Charles’s jaw tightened.

Victoria whispered,

“Dad?”

He looked at her.

“Do not believe her.”

“Then explain it.”

“I don’t owe explanations to a room full of strangers.”

Evelyn laughed softly.

“You may owe them to someone else.”

Charles’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked toward the ballroom entrance.

The doors opened.

Two men and one woman entered.

Dark suits.

No champagne.

No evening gowns.

No smiles.

Charles stopped breathing.

Victoria whispered,

“Who are they?”

Evelyn stepped away from the microphone.

“The people your father has spent twenty years paying lawyers to avoid.”

The three strangers began walking toward the stage.

But before they reached it, another voice came from the back of the ballroom.

“Evelyn!”

She turned.

A man was pushing through the crowd.

Tall.

Mid-forties.

Dark suit.

No tie.

His name was Nathan Cole.

And the second Evelyn saw his face, her composure cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Nathan reached the stage.

“You need to leave.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“What happened?”

“Now.”

“Nathan.”

He leaned closer.

“The files were accessed.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“By whom?”

“We don’t know.”

“When?”

“Seven minutes ago.”

Evelyn looked at the flash drive.

Nathan shook his head.

“Not that copy.”

“The original archive.”

For the first time, fear appeared in Evelyn Vale’s eyes.

Charles saw it.

And smiled.

Victoria noticed.

“Dad?”

Charles straightened his jacket.

“You really thought you were the only one who had been preparing for tonight?”

Evelyn stared at him.

Nathan whispered,

“We have to move.”

Evelyn didn’t.

Charles took one slow step forward.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Victoria’s head snapped toward him.

“What did you say?”

Charles realized his mistake.

Evelyn went completely still.

Nathan looked at Charles.

Then at Evelyn.

Victoria whispered,

“Stayed dead?”

She turned toward her father.

“You told everyone she was dead?”

Charles said nothing.

Victoria’s voice rose.

“Dad!”

Evelyn stepped down from the stage.

But Nathan grabbed her arm.

“Evelyn.”

She looked at him.

His face told her everything.

Someone had breached the archive.

Someone knew where the originals were stored.

And only five people in the world knew that location.

Evelyn was one.

Nathan was another.

The third had died nine years ago.

The fourth was standing across the ballroom.

Charles Langley.

And the fifth person…

Evelyn slowly looked toward the private balcony above the ballroom.

The balcony was empty.

At least it appeared empty.

Then a curtain moved.

Just slightly.

Evelyn’s blood ran cold.

“Nathan.”

“I saw it.”

“Lock the exits.”

Marcus heard her.

He touched his earpiece.

“Seal the ballroom.”

The enormous doors closed.

Guests began shouting.

Victoria stared around.

“What are you doing?”

Evelyn looked up at the balcony.

“Someone in this room just stole evidence from a secure archive.”

Charles smiled.

“And?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“And they knew I would be here tonight.”

A loud bang came from above.

Several guests screamed.

The lights flickered.

Nathan pulled Evelyn away from the stage.

Marcus shouted,

“Everybody stay down!”

Another sound came from the balcony.

Then something dropped onto the ballroom floor.

A phone.

It struck the marble and shattered.

Evelyn stared at it.

The screen was cracked.

But still illuminated.

Marcus picked it up.

“There’s a message.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Read it.”

Marcus hesitated.

“Read it.”

He turned the screen toward her.

Four words were displayed.

YOU FOUND THE WRONG FATHER.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Charles stared at the message.

And for the first time all night, he looked genuinely confused.

Victoria whispered,

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn slowly turned toward Charles.

Thirty-two years of certainty suddenly began collapsing inside her.

The hospital.

The payment.

The missing birth certificate.

Margaret’s letters.

The silver pin.

Every clue had led to Charles Langley.

But someone in that ballroom was telling her the entire foundation of her investigation was wrong.

Nathan looked at Evelyn.

“Could be a distraction.”

She nodded.

But she didn’t believe it.

Because there was one detail about her birth she had never told Nathan.

One detail Margaret had whispered to her only once before she died.

Charles Langley had not been the only powerful man visiting St. Catherine’s Hospital the night Evelyn was born.

And if the message was telling the truth…

Then Evelyn Vale hadn’t just walked into a stolen empire.

She had walked into a family secret powerful enough to destroy everyone in the room.
