Chapter 14 - BACK WHERE IT STARTED

The Grand Meridian Ballroom looked completely different in daylight.

The champagne had been cleared.

The overturned tables were gone.

The chandeliers still glittered.

But federal agents now occupied the room.

Alexander stood alone beneath the stage.

He had surrendered voluntarily.

That was what made Evelyn nervous.

Men like Alexander did not surrender.

They repositioned.

Evelyn entered.

Victoria walked beside her.

Alexander looked annoyed.

“I asked for Evelyn.”

Victoria smiled.

“I know.”

He ignored her.

Evelyn stopped twenty feet away.

“What do you want?”

Alexander held up his hands.

Empty.

“To make an offer.”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard it.”

“I don’t need to.”

Alexander smiled.

“You inherited Margaret’s stubbornness.”

Victoria spoke.

“And apparently I inherited your arrogance.”

Alexander looked at her.

“No.”

“You learned that from Charles.”

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

Evelyn said,

“Talk.”

Alexander looked around the ballroom.

“This is where you humiliated my entire network.”

“You did that yourself.”

“No.”

“You released the ledger.”

“Margaret did.”

His face tightened.

Even dead, Margaret still frightened him.

Evelyn noticed.

Alexander stepped closer.

Agents immediately raised their weapons.

He stopped.

“I have one account they haven’t found.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“Four hundred million.”

Victoria laughed.

“You think this is about money?”

“It’s always about money.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“That’s why you lost.”

Alexander’s smile faded.

“I can give it to you.”

“No.”

“In exchange for one thing.”

“No.”

“Let me finish.”

Evelyn stared.

Alexander continued.

“Destroy the original trust.”

Victoria frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the trust contains a clause Margaret never understood.”

Jonathan entered behind them.

“She understood it.”

Alexander looked toward him.

Jonathan continued.

“She wrote it.”

Alexander’s face changed.

Evelyn looked at Jonathan.

“What clause?”

Jonathan hesitated.

Victoria groaned.

“Seriously?”

Jonathan continued quickly.

“If either beneficiary attempts to transfer control to Alexander…”

“…his entire claim is permanently void.”

Evelyn understood.

Alexander didn’t need the trust destroyed to gain money.

He needed it destroyed because as long as it existed, he could never legally reclaim the empire.

Alexander looked at Evelyn.

“You think law will protect you?”

“No.”

She smiled faintly.

“People will.”

He laughed.

“People are weak.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“You’re right.”

Everyone looked at her.

Victoria continued.

“I was.”

“I thought money made me untouchable.”

“I thought staff were beneath me.”

“I thought security belonged to whoever had the biggest name.”

She glanced toward Marcus.

“I learned otherwise.”

Marcus almost smiled.

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“You made the same mistake.”

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“You think you’re different from me?”

“No.”

Victoria surprised everyone.

“I think I could have become you.”

She looked at Evelyn.

“And that scares me more than anything that happened last night.”

Evelyn held her gaze.

Victoria turned back.

“So I’m choosing differently.”

Alexander laughed.

“You think one speech changes who you are?”

“No.”

Victoria’s answer was immediate.

“What I do next does.”

Evelyn stepped beside her.

Alexander looked between them.

For the first time, he understood he had lost.

Not the money.

Not the company.

Them.

He had spent thirty-two years dividing people.

Margaret had spent thirty-two years making sure her daughters would eventually stand together.

Alexander looked toward Evelyn.

“You’ll regret this.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“You will.”

“You’ve spent your whole life confusing fear with respect.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Look around.”

Nobody moved for him.

No guards.

No executives.

No lawyers.

No frightened employees.

Nobody.

Evelyn continued.

“You don’t own anyone in this room.”

The same words she had spoken to Victoria.

But now Victoria stood beside her.

Alexander’s face changed.

Agents moved forward.

He did not resist.

As they placed him in handcuffs, Victoria watched silently.

Alexander looked at her one last time.

“You’re nothing without the Langley name.”

Victoria smiled.

“Good.”

They took him away.

The ballroom doors closed.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Samuel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

Evelyn immediately knew.

“What now?”

Samuel stared at her.

“The DNA results from St. Catherine’s.”

Victoria frowned.

“We already know Jonathan is our father.”

“Not those results.”

Samuel looked at both women.

“The neonatal blood cards.”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Hospitals preserved tiny blood samples from newborn screenings.

The original samples had survived.

Samuel continued.

“They can finally identify which baby Charles took.”

Victoria looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn looked back.

Thirty-two years of uncertainty could end with one laboratory report.

Samuel held out the phone.

“Do you want to know?”

May you like

Neither sister answered.

And suddenly the truth they had fought so hard to uncover became the one truth neither was sure she wanted.
