Chapter 13 - MARGARET’S LAST MOVE

Within an hour, the country was in chaos.

The black ledger appeared everywhere.

News organizations began verifying names.

Three officials resigned before noon.

Two judges were placed under investigation.

Several banks froze accounts.

Charles Langley was arrested before leaving the hotel.

Diane agreed to cooperate.

Robert was found alive at an abandoned warehouse.

And Alexander Vale disappeared.

Again.

But Evelyn barely cared about any of it.

She stared at the upload signature.

M.V.

Victoria sat beside her.

“Could Margaret have scheduled it?”

Samuel shook his head.

“Not nine years ahead.”

Jonathan said nothing.

Evelyn noticed.

“You know something.”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

She almost laughed.

“Then save us time.”

Jonathan reached into his coat.

He removed a small electronic device.

A security token.

“Margaret created a dead-man system.”

Samuel frowned.

“How?”

“Multiple encrypted archives.”

“Triggered by specific events.”

Victoria looked at the upload.

“Like opening Box 317.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn understood.

Alexander had believed he manipulated them into finding the box.

Margaret had anticipated it decades earlier.

Opening the box activated the final release.

Margaret had beaten him from the grave.

But Jonathan still looked worried.

“What?”

He hesitated.

“There’s another trigger.”

Evelyn stared.

“What trigger?”

“If the ledger is released…”

He swallowed.

“…a second archive opens.”

“What’s in it?”

Jonathan looked at the twins.

“Everything Margaret learned about the people closest to her.”

Samuel’s expression hardened.

“Including you.”

“Yes.”

“And Rose.”

“Yes.”

“And Charles.”

“Yes.”

Victoria leaned back.

“So basically nobody gets to keep a secret.”

Jonathan nodded.

Evelyn’s phone vibrated.

An email.

No sender.

One attachment.

FOR EVELYN AND VICTORIA.

She opened it.

Margaret appeared on video.

Older.

Ill.

But smiling.

Evelyn’s eyes immediately filled.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Margaret looked into the camera.

“My girls.”

Victoria covered her mouth.

Evelyn couldn’t move.

“If you are seeing this, then you found each other.”

Margaret smiled.

“And if you found each other, then Alexander failed.”

Victoria began crying silently.

Margaret continued.

“I wish I could tell you which one of you I raised.”

Both women froze.

Evelyn frowned.

“What?”

Margaret’s recorded voice continued.

“The truth is…”

“I never knew.”

Evelyn stared.

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Rose switched you.”

“Diane marked one of you.”

“I switched the records again.”

“And eventually there were so many lies that even I lost certainty.”

Evelyn looked at Victoria.

Margaret continued.

“I chose not to test you.”

“Because I realized something.”

“It did not matter.”

“You were both mine.”

Victoria broke.

She covered her face.

Evelyn took her hand.

Margaret continued.

“Evelyn, if you were the child I carried home, I loved you.”

“If you were the child stolen and later returned to me, I loved you.”

“Victoria, if you were the child taken from me, I loved you every day without knowing your face.”

“And if somehow the truth is different from everything I believed…”

“You are still my daughter.”

Both women were crying now.

Margaret looked directly into the camera.

“Blood can tell you where you began.”

“It cannot tell you who you must become.”

Evelyn squeezed Victoria’s hand.

Margaret’s expression became serious.

“There is one final thing.”

Jonathan looked down.

Evelyn noticed.

Margaret continued.

“Jonathan loves you.”

“But love does not make him innocent.”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“He knew Alexander was planning to take you.”

Evelyn went still.

Victoria looked at Jonathan.

Margaret continued.

“He believed he could stop it quietly.”

“He refused to expose the network because doing so would destroy his career.”

Jonathan whispered,

“Margaret…”

The recording continued.

“He chose reputation over risk.”

“And that choice cost us everything.”

Evelyn stared at him.

Jonathan’s eyes filled.

Margaret continued.

“Do not hate him because I did.”

“Do not forgive him because he asks.”

“Decide for yourselves.”

Then Margaret smiled again.

“And Victoria…”

Victoria looked at the screen.

“If you grew up wealthy…”

Margaret’s smile became knowing.

“…I hope someone taught you manners.”

Evelyn laughed through her tears.

Victoria stared.

Then laughed too.

“Oh, God.”

Margaret’s final words came softly.

“Find each other.”

“Choose each other.”

“Then choose what kind of women you want to be.”

The video ended.

Silence filled the room.

Victoria wiped her eyes.

Then looked at Evelyn.

“I really was awful to you.”

“Yes.”

“Are you ever going to stop saying yes?”

“Not today.”

Victoria nodded.

“Fair.”

Samuel’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at Evelyn.

“They found Alexander.”

“Where?”

Samuel swallowed.

“At the Grand Meridian.”

Victoria frowned.

“The hotel?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn stood.

“Why would he go back?”

Samuel’s face tightened.

“He’s in the ballroom.”

Evelyn felt cold.

Samuel continued.

“And he’s asking for you.”

Victoria stood too.

“For us.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

“He specifically said Evelyn.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

Evelyn looked at her.

Alexander still saw one daughter as valuable.

And the other as disposable.

May you like

Victoria picked up her coat.

“Then he gets both.”
