Chapter 2 - THE FIRST DOCUMENT

Claire did not open the third file.

Not yet.

The footsteps were getting closer.

She quickly took photos of the folder names with her phone, shut the laptop, and slid lower in her seat.

Julian walked past the front of her SUV without looking inside.

Brooke followed several steps behind him.

Claire waited until the elevator doors closed.

Then she exhaled.

Her phone rang immediately.

Julian.

She stared at his name until the fourth ring.

Then answered.

“Hey.”

“Where are you?”

His voice sounded perfectly normal.

That almost made it worse.

“Parking.”

“Great. Bring the laptop upstairs. Ballroom level.”

Claire looked at the screen.

“You sound stressed.”

“Investors.”

“Anything else?”

A tiny pause.

“No. Why?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“No reason.”

“Love you.”

There it was again.

“Sure,” Claire said.

Silence.

Julian laughed awkwardly.

“Sure?”

“I’m looking for parking.”

She ended the call.

Then reopened the computer.

The first document was titled:

MARITAL SETTLEMENT AND EQUITY ASSIGNMENT AGREEMENT.

Claire read the first paragraph.

Her pulse began hammering.

The agreement stated that in the event of divorce, Claire would voluntarily transfer thirty-one percent of her voting interest in Bennett Development Group to Julian Mercer.

Claire owned forty-eight percent of the company.

Her father owned twenty-six.

Brooke owned thirteen.

The remaining shares were held by family trusts and senior partners.

With Claire’s thirty-one percent, Julian would effectively control the company when combined with proxy agreements Claire had never heard of.

She scrolled faster.

Then froze.

Her signature was already on page nineteen.

Claire Bennett Mercer.

It looked real.

Almost perfect.

Except Claire had never signed it.

She checked the date.

Six weeks earlier.

On that date, Claire had been in Denver overseeing a hospital construction project.

The document listed a witness.

Her father.

Robert Bennett.

“No.”

Claire whispered the word aloud.

Her father would never—

She stopped herself.

An hour ago she would have said Brooke would never kiss her husband.

Claire opened the second file.

BENNETT VOTING TRANSFER AND LOAN SECURITY AGREEMENT.

The numbers made her dizzy.

Julian had negotiated a $6.4 million private loan using expected control of Claire’s shares as collateral.

The lender believed the transfer would become effective after something called an “execution event.”

Tomorrow.

9:00 a.m.

Claire scrolled toward the bottom.

There was her signature again.

There was her father’s.

And there was Brooke’s.

Her sister had signed as a beneficiary acknowledging the restructuring.

Claire’s throat tightened.

The kiss suddenly seemed almost small.

This wasn’t just an affair.

They were planning something.

Together.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Brooke.

Where are you??? We’re waiting to surprise you! 🎂

Claire almost laughed.

Instead, she typed:

Five minutes.

She downloaded both files to her phone.

Then her finger hovered over the third.

Mercer_Parentage_CONFIDENTIAL.pdf

The document was twelve years old.

Claire opened it.

At first she saw laboratory codes.

Collection dates.

Chain-of-custody signatures.

Then three names.

Alleged Father: Julian Thomas Mercer.

Claire stopped breathing.

Her eyes moved downward.

Child: Ethan Robert Bennett.

Brooke’s twelve-year-old son.

Claire’s nephew.

The boy whose Little League games Julian never missed.

The boy Julian called “buddy.”

The boy Claire had loved since the day he was born.

At the bottom of the page was one sentence.

Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.

Claire covered her mouth.

And suddenly every birthday party, every Christmas, every family vacation for the last twelve years rearranged itself in her memory.

Then she noticed the signature beneath the test.

Someone had witnessed the original collection.

May you like

Someone Claire trusted almost as much as her own husband.

Her mother.
