Chapter 1 - 7:18 P.M.

At 7:18 on Claire Bennett’s thirty-ninth birthday, she watched her husband put both hands on her sister’s face and kiss her like he had been waiting all day to do it.

Claire stopped walking.

Julian’s laptop nearly slipped from her fingers.

For one strange second, her brain refused to understand what her eyes were seeing.

The fourth level of the Halston Hotel parking garage was almost empty.

Concrete pillars.

Fluorescent lights.

The distant hum of traffic four floors below.

And Julian.

Her husband of fourteen years.

Standing beside his black Mercedes with Brooke pressed against the driver’s door.

Claire’s younger sister.

The woman who had texted her that morning.

Happy birthday, big sis. Love you more than you know.

Julian kissed Brooke again.

This time Brooke pulled him closer by his jacket.

Claire’s stomach turned.

She backed behind a concrete pillar before either of them saw her.

Her phone vibrated.

A text from Julian.

You close? Investors are arriving. Need the laptop ASAP. Love you.

Claire stared at the word.

Love.

Her fingers went numb.

Twenty-nine minutes earlier, Julian had called her from the car.

“I forgot my laptop.”

Claire had laughed.

“You’d forget your own head if it wasn’t attached.”

“Good thing I married organized.”

She had believed the warmth in his voice.

Believed the joke.

Believed fourteen years of Sunday coffee, Christmas mornings, late-night takeout, mortgage payments, funerals, vacations, fights, apologies, and whispered promises in the dark.

Now Brooke was straightening Julian’s tie.

“You need to go,” Brooke whispered.

“I know.”

“She could show up.”

Julian smiled.

“Claire trusts me.”

The words hit harder than the kiss.

Brooke laughed softly.

“She trusts everybody.”

“No.”

Julian touched Brooke’s cheek.

“She trusts family.”

Claire’s breathing stopped.

She slowly lifted her phone and recorded fifteen seconds.

Enough.

More than enough.

Then Brooke said something that made Claire lower the phone.

“After tonight, how much longer?”

Julian glanced toward the elevator.

“If she signs tomorrow, we’re done.”

Brooke’s expression changed.

“And if she doesn’t?”

Julian smiled.

“She will.”

Claire looked down at the laptop in her arms.

Signs what?

She retreated silently toward her SUV.

She could have screamed.

Could have crossed the garage and slapped them both.

Could have demanded an explanation.

Instead, Claire climbed into her car, locked the doors, and placed Julian’s laptop on the passenger seat.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

The computer woke without asking for a password.

Julian had left a spreadsheet open.

Claire almost closed it.

Then she saw her own name.

CLAIRE BENNETT MERCER – EXECUTION SCHEDULE

Her heartbeat jumped.

Underneath were three files.

Settlement_Final.pdf

BennettVotingTransfer.pdf

And one more.

A document with a date from twelve years earlier.

Mercer_Parentage_CONFIDENTIAL.pdf

Claire stared at it.

Then she heard footsteps approaching her car.

Julian was coming.

And Claire had less than thirty seconds to discover what her husband had spent years hiding.
