Chapter 11 - THE INVESTOR DINNER

Julian had made one fatal mistake.

He believed Claire would still be emotionally shattered.

She was.

He just didn’t understand that shattered things could still be sharp.

The next evening, Bennett Development’s investor dinner began at the Halston Hotel.

The same hotel.

The same building where Claire’s old life had ended.

Julian was expected to announce a major financing partnership at eight.

Despite being officially “missing,” he had contacted his attorney that afternoon claiming he had fled because he “feared for his safety.”

Maya laughed when she heard it.

“Convenient resurrection.”

At 7:55, Julian walked into the ballroom surrounded by attorneys.

Reporters shouted questions.

Robert stood beside him.

Brooke was nowhere in sight.

Claire entered through the opposite doors.

The room went quiet.

Julian’s face changed.

“Claire.”

She smiled.

“Glad they found you.”

His lawyer stepped forward.

“This is a private corporate event.”

Claire kept walking.

“I know. I own it.”

Robert hissed, “Don’t do this.”

Claire stopped in front of her father.

“You lost the right to tell me what to do when you traded my marriage for financing.”

Robert went pale.

Julian looked sharply at him.

“You told her?”

“No.”

“Grandma did.”

That shut them both up.

Maya walked in carrying a leather portfolio.

Behind her came two representatives from First Chicago Trust.

Then Bennett Development’s chief financial officer.

Then three outside directors.

Julian realized what was happening.

“You can’t call a board action without notice.”

Maya replied, “Emergency fraud provisions.”

Robert snapped, “Fraud has not been proven.”

Claire placed copies of the forged transfer agreement on the table.

“Then explain my signature.”

Julian’s attorney said, “Mrs. Mercer voluntarily—”

Claire interrupted.

“I was in Denver.”

Maya produced hotel records.

Flight records.

Phone location data.

Security footage.

Then the notary entered the room.

Julian’s face lost color.

The man looked terrified.

Maya asked one question.

“Did Claire Mercer sign this document in your presence?”

“No.”

Murmurs spread through the ballroom.

“Who did?”

The notary pointed.

At Diane.

Claire’s mother had quietly entered behind everyone else.

Diane began crying.

Julian whispered, “You stupid—”

Claire turned.

“Finish that sentence.”

Julian stopped.

Maya handed copies of Margaret’s amendment to the trustees.

The lead trustee read quickly.

His eyebrows rose.

Robert moved toward him.

“That amendment was never properly executed.”

The trustee looked at the original signature.

Then the witness certifications.

Then the bank custody record.

“I disagree.”

Robert went still.

The trustee continued.

“Under Section Nine, Robert Bennett’s attempted transfer of Claire Mercer’s voting interest constitutes a triggering act.”

Julian’s lawyer stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

The trustee looked at Claire.

“It means Mrs. Mercer is now controlling trustee.”

Claire’s heart pounded.

“How much control?”

“Seventy-four percent.”

The room erupted.

Julian reached for the forged agreement.

Claire pulled it away first.

“You wanted my shares.”

She looked him directly in the eyes.

“Now you don’t even have a job.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“You can’t fire me.”

Claire turned to the board.

“All in favor of immediately removing Julian Mercer from every executive and advisory position pending a criminal forensic audit?”

Hands rose.

One.

Two.

Four.

Seven.

Nine.

Julian stared.

Claire counted.

Then smiled.

“Motion carried.”

Julian lunged toward her.

Security stepped between them.

His mask finally broke.

“You think you won?”

Claire said nothing.

Julian pointed at her.

“Ask your sister why she isn’t here.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“What did you do?”

Julian smiled.

“Nothing.”

Then Claire’s phone rang.

Brooke.

Claire answered.

Her sister was crying so hard she could barely speak.

“Claire.”

“Where are you?”

“At your house.”

“Why?”

“I found something.”

“What?”

Brooke’s next words made Claire forget the entire ballroom.

“There was another plan.”

Claire’s blood went cold.

“What plan?”

Brooke whispered, “Julian wasn’t trying to divorce you.”

May you like

“What are you talking about?”

“He was planning to make sure you could never run the company again.”
