Chapter 10 - THE ORIGINAL

Maya killed the lights.

Claire moved away from the window.

Outside, footsteps crossed the gravel driveway.

Helen whispered, “Back door.”

Claire grabbed the envelope.

“No.”

Maya stared at her.

“No?”

“I’m done running from him.”

“Claire, this isn’t the moment to make a point.”

The front door handle moved.

Locked.

Then Julian’s voice came through the door.

“Helen?”

Claire’s entire body tightened.

He sounded calm.

That familiar Julian calm.

“Helen, I just need to talk.”

Maya called 911 silently.

Julian knocked again.

Then harder.

Claire stepped into the hallway.

“Looking for me?”

Silence.

Then Julian laughed softly from the other side.

“Claire.”

“Surprised?”

“Open the door.”

“No.”

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”

“Your car says otherwise.”

Another pause.

“You think I staged that?”

“Yes.”

“You always did jump to conclusions.”

Claire almost smiled.

“There’s the husband I remember.”

Julian lowered his voice.

“Give me the amendment.”

“So you know it exists.”

“It’s invalid.”

“Then why drive two hours for it?”

Silence.

Maya mouthed, Police seven minutes.

Julian tried the door again.

“Helen stole company property.”

Helen shouted from the kitchen.

“Tell that lying snake I kept Margaret’s papers exactly where she told me!”

Julian’s calm disappeared.

“Old woman, stay out of this.”

Claire stepped closer to the door.

“You were stealing from my family before we even married.”

“I built your family.”

“You used us.”

“I saved your father’s company when it was drowning.”

Claire stopped.

That was new.

Julian continued.

“Ask Robert what Bennett Development looked like sixteen years ago.”

Claire didn’t answer.

“Ask him who covered twenty-eight million dollars in debt.”

Helen whispered, “Don’t listen.”

Julian kept talking.

“Your father needed investors. I brought them. He needed access to capital. I found it.”

“And in exchange you married me?”

“That wasn’t the plan.”

“Wasn’t it?”

Silence.

Then Julian said quietly, “I did love you.”

Claire’s throat tightened despite herself.

Past tense.

“I loved Brooke too.”

There it was.

Ugly and selfish and absurdly simple.

“You don’t love people, Julian.”

“Don’t lecture me.”

“You collect them.”

His fist hit the door.

Helen jumped.

Claire didn’t.

Sirens sounded faintly in the distance.

Julian heard them.

“Give me the amendment.”

“No.”

“You think winning the company will fix this?”

“No.”

“You think Brooke will choose you?”

“I don’t care.”

“You think your parents will survive the investigation you’re about to start?”

Claire’s hand tightened around the envelope.

Julian’s voice became almost gentle.

“If that document enters court, your father goes to prison.”

Claire froze.

Maya looked at her.

Julian continued.

“Your mother could too.”

“For what?”

“Fraud. Obstruction. Tax violations. Pick one.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“You did that.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“Your father.”

The sirens were louder.

Julian moved away from the porch.

His final words came through the door.

“Read page eleven, Claire.”

Then his car engine roared.

By the time police arrived, he was gone.

Claire waited until the officers finished searching the property.

Then she opened Margaret’s original amendment.

Page eleven contained an attached financial memorandum.

Maya read it first.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Maya handed it over.

Claire read three paragraphs.

The room seemed to tilt.

Sixteen years earlier, Robert Bennett had concealed catastrophic company losses.

He had falsified financial statements.

Margaret discovered it.

Julian helped Robert refinance the debt.

But there had been a condition.

Robert agreed to bring Julian into the Bennett family.

Not as an employee.

As Claire’s husband.

Claire lowered the page.

“My father sold me.”

Helen shook her head.

“Not exactly.”

Claire looked at her.

Helen’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Margaret believed Julian eventually fell in love with you.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“That helps.”

“No.”

Helen pointed to the next page.

“But this might.”

Claire turned it.

A handwritten note had been attached.

If Robert attempts to transfer Claire’s voting power, Claire becomes sole controlling trustee immediately.

Maya stared at it.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“If this is valid…”

Claire looked up.

Maya smiled for the first time in twenty-four hours.

“You don’t own forty-eight percent anymore.”

May you like

Claire frowned.

“You control seventy-four.”
