Chapter 7 - The Transfer

The back of the prison transport van was pitch black.
Mark sat strapped to a narrow bench with three other inmates.
The engine roared as the van navigated through the rainy city streets.
Sixty days in county jail meant he would be powerless.
Sixty days gave Sarah all the time she needed to execute her plan.
"Hey, fresh fish," a voice growled from across the dark space.
Mark looked up through the shadows.
A large man with tattooed arms was staring at him.
"You're the guy who hit his kid, right?" the inmate asked.
"I didn't touch my children!" Mark yelled back defensively.
"That's what they all say," the inmate chuckled darkly.
Suddenly, the transport van swerved violently to the left.
Tires screeched loudly against the wet asphalt.
BOOM!
A heavy impact crashed into the side of the transport van.
The van rolled onto its side with a deafening metallic screech.
Sparks flew through the dark interior.
Mark was thrown violently against the reinforced wall.
Pain flared through his shoulder and head.
The world went temporarily dizzy and dark.
The engine sputtered and died.
Smoke began pouring into the locked rear compartment.
The other inmates screamed in terror, kicking at the locked doors.
From outside, heavy footsteps approached the wrecked vehicle.
Mark coughed violently as smoke filled his lungs.
The rear doors were suddenly pried open with a loud crunch of twisting metal.
A figure framed by rain and bright headlights stood outside.
The man was wearing a dark raincoat and holding a crowbar.
He reached into the wreck and grabbed Mark by his jacket collar.
"Get up, Mark!" the man barked.
Mark squinted through the thick smoke and rain.
"Who are you?!" Mark choked out.
"Someone who owes your real father his life," the man shouted over the storm.
May you like
"If you stay here, Sarah's people will make sure you don't survive the night in jail!" the man urged.
"Now get out!"
