Chapter 11 - The Traitor

Mark turned his head sharply toward Marcus in the dark car.

"What do you mean someone gave them our coordinates?" Mark demanded.

"Only three people knew about that safehouse," Marcus said coldly.

"You, me, and Victoria Sterling."

Mark’s mind reeled.

"Victoria saved me!" Mark argued.

"She brought you to represent me!" Mark insisted.

"Did she?" Marcus asked, his tone dropping low.

"Ask yourself, Mark," Marcus said.

"How did she get access to your father's private files so fast?"

"How did she know which cell block you were in?"

Mark sat in stunned silence.

The pieces began connecting in a terrifying picture.

"She was at the court," Mark remembered softly.

"She was the one who insisted on bringing up my father's trust in front of Judge Vance!" Mark realized.

"She provoked the judge on purpose," Marcus nodded grimly.

"She wanted your bail denied."

"She wanted you trapped in that transport van."

Mark slammed his fist against the dashboard in pure rage.

"Every single person I trusted was in on it!" Mark yelled.

"Not me," Marcus said quietly.

"I served your father for twenty years."

"I watched you grow up, Mark."

"I swear on my life, I will get your daughters back."

Marcus pulled the car into a dark subterranean parking garage beneath an abandoned shopping mall.

He killed the engine and turned off the headlights.

The garage was completely black.

"We stay here until morning," Marcus instructed.

"They'll be sweeping the main highway out of the city."

Mark reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

He had retrieved it from the safehouse floor during the chaos.

The screen was cracked, but it still turned on.

He had one unread voicemail.

It was from an unknown number.

Mark pressed his ear to the phone speaker.

A child's terrified voice echoed from the small speaker.

"Daddy... please come get us..." Lily cried on the audio recording.

"Mommy said we're going on a airplane tomorrow and never coming back..."

Then Sarah's cold voice cut in over the recording.

"You have twelve hours, Mark," Sarah said softly.

May you like

"Come to the cliff house, or you'll never see them again."

The line went dead.
