Chapter 7 - Flight to Nowhere

The Gulfstream G650 climbed rapidly through the heavy cloud deck over the Atlantic, leaving the rainstorms and the howling police sirens behind. Inside the pressurized luxury cabin, the air was cold, smelling of stale champagne and expensive leather.

Estelle Pierce adjusted the collar of her emerald blazer. Her diamond rings clinked against the crystal glass in her hand, but her gaze never shifted from the flight tracker glowing on the bulkhead monitor. The coordinates were set for Grand Cayman, an offshore haven where three generations of Pierce shell corporations sat safely out of reach of American subpoenas.

Across from her, Juliette was curled into a ball on the cream-leather sofa, clutching a damp napkin, her mascara running in ugly gray tracks down her cheeks.

"You said it was going to be simple!" Juliette shrieked, her voice bouncing shrilly off the cabin walls. "You told me we'd just put the girl away in a clinic! You didn't tell me Chris had state investigators monitoring the property! My face will be on every news channel in the country by sunrise!"

"Lower your voice, you sniveling fool," Estelle said, not even looking up from her tablet. "Panicking is a peasant habit. We are outside U.S. airspace in forty minutes. The Cayman authorities will not honor an emergency extradition request without an international warrant, and that takes weeks to process through the diplomatic channels."

"Weeks?" Juliette laughed hysterically, her eyes wild with panic. "Chris knows everything, Estelle! He knows Rachel’s hit-and-run wasn’t an accident! He has the ledger! He’s going to hunt us down!"

Estelle took a slow, measured sip of her scotch. "Christopher has a child to nurse. Sentimentality makes men weak, slow, and predictable. By the time he convinces the district attorney to unfreeze our offshore trusts, the liquid assets will already be transferred to our numbered accounts in Zurich. You will receive your five million dollars, Juliette, and you will buy yourself a new face and a new identity in Buenos Aires."

"And what about Emma?" Juliette hissed, leaning forward. "What happens when that little brat talks? She remembered your voice, Estelle! She told Chris you wanted her gone!"

Estelle’s eyes narrowed into twin daggers of pure ice. "A six-year-old child's testimony is legally meaningless without physical evidence tying me directly to the pool. My lawyers will claim Yvette manipulated the girl. I didn't push the girl. You did."

Juliette went deathly still. The color drained completely from her lips. "What did you just say?"

"I said," Estelle continued with chilling precision, "that you were acting independently out of jealousy and greed. The security cameras outside the cabana show you pacing the perimeter ten minutes before the child went into the water. My name does not appear on any direct purchase order for the diazepam."

"You gave me the vial!" Juliette screamed, leaping to her feet, her manicured fingers curling into claws. "You handed it to me in your dressing room this morning! You told me it was the only way to save my position in this family!"

"Prove it," Estelle whispered.

Before Juliette could lunge forward, the heavy armored cockpit door clicked open. The first officer stepped into the cabin, wearing a flight headset. His expression was grim, his eyes avoiding Estelle entirely.

"Madam Pierce," the copilot said, his voice flat and formal. "Air traffic control in Miami has just rerouted our flight path. We are being denied clearance into international airspace."

Estelle set her glass down with a sharp snap. "That's absurd. I own the charter company that operates this aircraft. Inform Miami control that this is a private sovereign charter and we are maintaining our original coordinates."

"We can't do that, ma'am," the copilot said quietly.

"And why the hell not?" Estelle demanded, rising from her seat with aristocratic menace.

"Because two F-16 interceptors from the Florida Air National Guard are currently flanking our wings," the copilot replied, pointing out the oval cabin window. "And they've just ordered us to land immediately at Homestead Air Reserve Base."

Estelle turned her head toward the reinforced glass. Through the dark storm clouds, the flashing strobe lights of an armed military jet sliced through the mist, flying less than two hundred yards off their port wing.

Down below, the city lights of Miami looked like an inescapable golden cage.
