Chapter 4 - The Extraction

"Sedated?" Christopher’s voice dropped to a guttural register that made the armed guards instinctively take half a step back.
"Traces of liquid diazepam," Dr. Miller said, stepping out of the study with his prescription pad tucked under his arm, refusing to meet Estelle’s icy glare. "A dose like that would make a six-year-old completely lethargic within minutes. She wouldn't have had the motor reflexes to tread water or even scream for help once she went under. If she’d been in that water another thirty seconds..."
Dr. Miller trailed off, but the unspoken reality crashed over the foyer like a tidal wave. Emma was meant to sink silently to the bottom.
Estelle didn't bat an eye. She set her empty scotch glass on the mahogany side table with a crisp clink. "A tragedy averted. Clearly, the child got into something she shouldn't have in the medicine cabinet. Which only proves my point to Child Protective Services—gross parental negligence."
"You sick, twisted monster," Christopher said.
"Guards," Estelle commanded, her voice cutting through the tension. "Remove him from the property. Keep the girl in the study until the county social workers arrive."
The two private security guards reached for their utility belts, closing the distance. "Sir, you need to step outside. Don't make this difficult."
Christopher didn't reach for a weapon. He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out his private cell phone. He tapped the screen once, placing it on speaker.
A gruff, authoritative voice boomed through the speakerphone.
"State Police Special Investigations, Captain Vance speaking. Christopher, we’ve tracked the incoming transmission from your estate's network. The live feed has been recorded."
Estelle’s composed mask fractured for the first time. Her chin twitched. "What is the meaning of this?"
"You've owned the local precinct for twenty years, Mother," Christopher said, staring straight into her widening eyes. "You bought the city council, you buried the traffic cams when Rachel was killed, and you control the private security firm guarding this gate. But you don't own the State Police Financial Crimes and Homicide division."
Christopher turned the phone slightly. "Captain Vance, did you get the audio transmission from the study?"
"Loud and clear. We have recorded admissions of corporate blackmail, tampering with evidence in the Rachel Monroe homicide investigation, and Dr. Miller’s medical testimony regarding the drugging of a minor. Three tactical units are rolling through your front gates right now."
The faint wail of distant sirens began to pierce through the estate’s thick double-glazed windows.
Estelle’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. "You fool! You destroy this family, you destroy yourself! Every dollar you have comes from Pierce Industries!"
"Keep the money," Christopher whispered, stepping backward toward the study door. "I'm taking my daughter."
He kicked open the door, scooped Emma into his arms—wrapped tightly in her warm blanket—and grabbed Yvette’s arm. "Yvette, we're leaving."
"You won't make it to the main road!" Estelle screamed from the stairs, her veneer of aristocratic dignity completely disintegrating into rabid fury. "Lock the gates! Shoot the tires! Do not let them leave this house!"

The lead guard hesitated, listening to the swelling crescendo of police sirens tearing up the two-mile estate driveway. He slowly stepped back, raising both hands in surrender.
Christopher didn't look back. He carried Emma out through the side courtyard, her tiny, drugged head resting heavily against his pounding heart.
