Chapter 7 - The Stolen Daughter

Detective Bell dragged Richard Vance out onto the gravel driveway just as the roof of the lake house collapsed in a shower of sparks and flaming timber.
Paramedics swarmed the old man, ripping open his shirt and jamming an IV line into his forearm. But Richard was already slipping into cardiac arrest. His pulse flickered, faded, and flattened on the monitor before the ambulance even reached the main highway.
Richard Vance was dead. For real this time.
Back at the county sheriffâs station, Evelyn sat in a small conference room, holding a paper cup of lukewarm tea that she hadn't touched. Vanessa sat beside her, softly rubbing Maisieâs back as the little girl slept soundly on two pushed-together plastic chairs, covered in an officerâs fleece jacket.
The door clicked open. Detective Bell walked in, smelling of smoke and wet soot, his face grim.
Evelyn looked up, her eyes red and swollen. "Did you find him?"
Bell closed the door, pulled up a chair across from them, and sat down heavily. "Richard is dead. He was attacked at the lake house before we arrived. But before he died, he gave me a statement."
Bell paused, looking directly at Evelyn. He took a slow breath, bracing himself for the impact of what he had to deliver.
"Evelyn... thirty years ago, when you gave birth to your second child at St. Judeâs Memorial, the hospital told you your baby girl was stillborn."
Evelynâs body went completely rigid. Her hand froze in mid-air. "What did you say?"
"You had a severe postpartum hemorrhage," Bell continued, his voice quiet, measured, and devastating. "You were in a medically induced coma for three days. When you woke up, Richard told you the baby didn't make it, and that he had already handled the cremation."
Tears spilled instantly over Evelynâs eyelashes. "My little girl... Clara. I never even got to hold her."
"She wasn't cremated, Evelyn," Bell said gently. "Richard took the baby. He had run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to organized bookmakers in Chicago. He faked his death two months later, took your newborn daughter, renamed her Sarah, and raised her under a forged identity using the money he stole from your fatherâs accounts."
Vanessa gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "My God... Sarah was Evelynâs daughter. That means..."
The horrific realization hit the room like a freight train.
"Grant married his own biological sister," Evelyn whispered, the words choking in her throat before turning into a scream of pure agony. "Grant knew. Oh God, Grant knew!"
"No," Bell said sharply, leaning forward. "Grant didn't know at first. Richard kept that leverage over Grantâs head. But six months ago, when Grant found out that Sarah was his full-blooded sisterâand that Maisie was the product of that unionâGrant didn't go to the police. He panicked. If the trust fund administrators discovered the fraud and the incestuous marriage, the entire three-million-dollar estate would be seized by the state, and Grant would go to prison for fraud and identity theft."

"So he decided to wipe out the evidence," Vanessa said, shivering. "He killed Sarah. And then... he tried to eliminate Maisie."
"And heâs not working alone," Bell said, standing up. "Donald Hayes, Grantâs personal attorney, was at the lake house. He killed Richard to silence him, and he took the original birth records. Right now, Hayes is trying to leave the country."
