Chapter 14 - The Reckoning

Seventy-two hours later, the storm had completely cleared, leaving the sky over Blackwood County a crisp, piercing autumn blue.

At the federal courthouse in Chicago, the legal machinery moved with brutal efficiency.

Clara Higgins, stripped of her designer jewelry and clad in an orange correctional jumpsuit, sat beside a court-appointed defense attorney. Across the aisle, federal prosecutors laid out the thirty-year conspiracy: the fraudulent 1994 stillborn certificate, the offshore laundering of the Calloway family trust, the attempted cover-up of Sarah’s homicide, and the premeditated murder attempt on three-year-old Maisie.

Judge Robert Vance—no relation to the disgraced Richard—slammed his wooden gavel down three times.

"For the charges of kidnapping, insurance fraud exceeding two million dollars, and accessory to murder after the fact, Clara Higgins is remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for a term of thirty-five years without the possibility of parole."

Clara collapsed into tears, her face buried on the wooden defense table as federal marshals cuffed her ankles and led her through the side exit.

Outside on the courthouse steps, Evelyn and Vanessa stood together.

Through the efforts of Detective Bell and state social services, the court had formally granted permanent, joint legal guardianship of Maisie to Evelyn and Vanessa. The three-point-two-million-dollar trust fund established by Sarah’s maternal estate was permanently transferred into an independent, court-monitored educational foundation for Maisie, legally protected from any future claims or family debt.

Vanessa turned to Evelyn, holding a manila folder containing the finalized adoption certificates.

"You don't have to share a house with me, Evelyn," Vanessa said softly, her eyes sincere. "I know being around me reminds you of Grant and everything that happened."

Evelyn reached out, taking Vanessa’s hand and holding it tight with both of hers.

"You were the only one in that house who fought to save my granddaughter," Evelyn said, tears shining in her eyes, but her voice steady and warm. "Sarah didn't get the mother she deserved, but Maisie has two. We stay together."
