Chapter 13 - The Shadow in the Ward

The harsh pulse of the red emergency strobes painted the corridor in bloody intervals.
Detective Bell shoved Evelyn and Vanessa behind the bathroom door inside Room 412. "Stay down, lock it from the inside, and don't open for anyone except my voice."
"Detective, take this," Vanessa whispered, pulling a heavy brass medical oxygen regulator from the wall bracket and shoving it into his hands.
Bell didn't take it; he drew his Glock 19, thumbed off the safety, and eased the room's main door open an inch.
Through the narrow gap, the silhouette of a tall man in a gray maintenance jacket moved deliberately down the hall. In his gloved right hand, an eight-inch utility knife gleamed under the flashing red lights. On the back of his exposed wrist, the anchor tattoo wrapped in barbed wire was unmistakable.
Frank Miller wasn't here to escape. He was here to tie off the last loose end.
Three years ago, Frank had been paid fifty thousand dollars from Grant’s secret account to tow Sarah’s crushed Volvo away from Highway 9, hide the severed brake lines from state investigators, and crush the vehicle in his private salvage yard before state forensics could inspect the underside. But with Hayes in custody and the lockbox open, Frank knew his arrest warrant was hours away.
If Maisie died, the child’s trust would immediately dissolve into the estate litigation pool, freezing the federal investigation into the family shell accounts and giving the conspirators leverage to cut plea deals.
Frank reached Room 412, kicked the door wide, and raised the knife.
Bell stepped out of the shadow behind the doorframe, bringing the muzzle of his service weapon directly against Frank’s cheekbone.
"Drop it, Frank," Bell whispered with lethal precision. "Give me one reason."
Frank froze, the whites of his eyes wild and bloodshot. For a split second, the muscles in his forearm bunched, preparing to drive the blade forward.
Bell didn't wait. He drove a violent front kick into Frank’s midsection, doubling him over, then brought the heavy steel slide of his handgun down hard across the back of Frank’s neck. Frank hit the linoleum floor with a concussive thud, the knife clattering harmlessly against the base of Maisie’s bed.
Before the mechanic could push himself up, Bell pinned him with a knee between his shoulder blades, twisted his arms back, and ratcheted a pair of steel cuffs around his wrists until the ratchet clicked to the bone.
"Officer down on the second floor!" a voice crackled through Bell’s shoulder radio. "Subject Grant Calloway has flatlined in Post-Op Recovery! Code Blue in Room 204!"
Bell stood up, dragging Frank by the collar, and looked over at the bathroom door.
Evelyn cracked the door open, her face pale as a ghost, clutching Maisie’s favorite stuffed bear to her chest.

"Grant?" she choked out, hearing the radio call.
Bell looked at her with steady, unblinking eyes. "He didn't make it out of surgery, Evelyn. It's over."
