Chapter 11 - The Aunt’s Confession

The rain outside the Blackwood County Sheriff’s Office had finally stopped by midnight, leaving the streets slick and reflecting the stark white glow of streetlamps.

Inside Interrogation Room B, sixty-two-year-old Clara Higgins sat alone at the stainless steel table. She wore a pristine beige trench coat, her silver hair neatly pinned, clutching a designer leather purse in her lap like a shield. She was Evelyn’s younger sister—the woman who had hosted every Thanksgiving dinner, who had paid for Grant’s private high school tuition, and who had stood as the godmother at Maisie’s baptism.

The door clicked open. Evelyn walked in, flanked by Detective Bell.

Clara looked up, forcing a sympathetic, tearful smile. "Evelyn, thank God! The police dragged me out of my house in the middle of the night without explaining a thing. They said Grant was hurt? Is he okay?"

Evelyn didn't sit down. She walked up to the edge of the table and dropped the 1994 St. Jude Memorial release form onto the metal surface.

Clara’s smile instantly evaporated.

"You told me she was blue," Evelyn whispered, her voice dangerously calm. "You sat by my hospital bed while I was hooked up to blood transfusions, held my hand, and told me that my baby girl never took a single breath."

Clara stared at the faded ink of her own signature on the line marked Next of Kin Authorization. Her fingers twitched, tightening on the strap of her purse.

"Evelyn... you don't understand what Richard was doing back then," Clara stammered, her voice losing its polished composure. "He owed five hundred thousand dollars to loan sharks in South Chicago. They threatened to kill him, kill Grant, and burn our parents' estate to the ground. Richard came to me in the maternity ward while you were unconscious. He had a plan."

"A plan to sell my daughter?!" Evelyn screamed, slamming her palms onto the table. The bang rattled the metal legs. "You gave my newborn baby to that monster!"

"He didn't sell her!" Clara cried out, tears finally breaking through her makeup. "He took her to raise her under a clean name! He promised me he would take the life insurance payout from his fake death, pay off the mob, and bring Sarah back to us after five years when the heat died down!"

"And when five years passed?" Detective Bell interrupted, stepping forward with his arms crossed. "Why didn't you go to the FBI?"

Clara looked down at the floor, unable to meet Evelyn’s piercing gaze. "Because Richard had recorded every phone call between us. If I went to the police, he would release the tapes showing I signed the false death certificate and helped him collect the two-million-dollar insurance fraud payout. I would have spent twenty years in federal prison. I had a family, Evelyn! I had a career!"

"You had my child!" Evelyn sobbed, her entire body shaking with fury. "And when Sarah grew up, when Grant found her and brought her into this family... you knew who she was, didn't you? You sat at their wedding dinner and toasted them!"

Clara’s silence was absolute confession. She buried her face in her manicured hands and began to weep.

"You knew Sarah was my daughter," Evelyn said, stepping back in utter revulsion. "You let my son marry his own sister just to protect your own comfortable little life."

Bell opened the door and gestured to two waiting deputies. "Clara Higgins, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, grand fraud, and accessory to murder after the fact. Cuff her."

As the deputies led Clara away in tears, Evelyn stood alone in the hallway, leaning against the cold cinderblock wall. Her entire world—her husband, her sister, her son—had been built on a foundation of unvarnished cruelty.

Then her phone buzzed in her coat pocket.

It was a call from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Blackwood General.

Vanessa’s voice came over the speaker, frantic and breathless: "Evelyn, you need to get here right now. Maisie’s fever spiked to 104. The doctors ran an emergency echocardiogram... and they found something inside her IV line."
