Chapter 7 - Adrian Cross

Daniel did not call Vanessa.

That was the first intelligent thing any of us had done in weeks.

Samuel arrived within an hour.

The three of us locked ourselves inside my study.

Daniel paced.

“I want everything.”

“Every request.”

“Every login.”

“Every document.”

Samuel nodded.

“Harrington is preparing the file.”

Daniel stopped.

Then looked at me.

“You knew about Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough to be afraid.”

He flinched at the word.

Afraid.

I hated that.

I had spent months trying to protect him from that feeling.

Now it was unavoidable.

Samuel explained the civil cases.

The wealthy men.

The suspicious transfers.

The settlements.

Vanessa’s connection.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

When Samuel finished, my son looked twenty years older.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I answered honestly.

“Because she had already convinced you I was looking for reasons to hate her.”

“You should have told me.”

“Yes.”

“I should have.”

He looked at the floor.

“I made you think you were crazy.”

“No.”

“She did that.”

“I helped.”

I walked toward him.

“Then help me end it.”

He nodded.

The plan was simple.

Daniel would pretend nothing had changed.

He would not confront Vanessa.

He would not change his passwords yet.

He would not cancel the wedding.

He would allow her to believe the forged authorization had gone unnoticed.

Daniel hated every second of it.

That evening, he returned to Vanessa’s apartment.

I sat in my library with Samuel watching a secure message window.

At 9:12 p.m., Daniel sent one word.

Inside.

At 9:48.

Normal.

At 10:26.

She asked about Harrington.

At 10:31.

She says the authorization is “routine.”

At 10:52.

Adrian is coming tomorrow.

Samuel leaned closer to the screen.

“This is moving fast.”

At 11:14, another message arrived.

She wants me to sign something Friday.

I stared at it.

“What?”

Samuel typed.

Ask what it is.

A minute passed.

Then another.

Daniel replied.

She says it is a marital asset protection agreement.

Samuel muttered something under his breath.

“What?”

I asked.

“That phrase means nothing.”

“Which means?”

“It means the title may be intentionally harmless.”

Daniel returned to the estate the next morning.

He looked exhausted.

Vanessa believed he had come to retrieve cufflinks for a dinner.

Instead, he sat at my desk.

“I went through her office.”

I stared at him.

“Daniel.”

“I know.”

“But I found this.”

He placed a receipt on the desk.

A hotel receipt.

From eleven months earlier.

Vanessa Cole.

Adrian Cross.

Two rooms.

Same reservation.

Same corporate card.

I looked at the date.

Daniel had met Vanessa eight months earlier.

“They were still working together.”

he whispered.

“Three months before she met you.”

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“But this does.”

He placed a photograph beside it.

I stopped breathing.

It showed Daniel.

Walking out of the foundation headquarters.

The picture had been taken from across the street.

The date was fourteen months earlier.

Long before Vanessa claimed they had ever met.

On the back, someone had written four words.

Primary heir.

Emotionally accessible.

I sat down.

Daniel did not.

He could not.

His hands were shaking.

“She researched me.”

“Yes.”

“She chose me.”

I could not soften it anymore.

“Yes.”

Daniel turned away.

“I told her everything.”

His voice cracked.

“About Dad.”

“About being sixteen.”

“About never trusting relationships because I never knew if women liked me or what I had.”

He laughed once.

Empty.

“She knew exactly what fear to answer.”

I walked toward him.

He looked at me.

“And I accused you of hating her because she wasn’t rich enough.”

“You were protecting someone you loved.”

“I loved a person she invented.”

Before I could answer, his phone rang.

Vanessa.

Daniel stared at it.

Samuel raised one finger.

“Answer.”

Daniel did.

“Hey.”

Vanessa’s voice floated through the speaker.

“Where are you?”

“At Mom’s.”

Silence.

Then,

“Why?”

“Cufflinks.”

“You’ve been there forty minutes.”

Daniel and I looked at each other.

She was tracking him.

Daniel forced a laugh.

“Are you monitoring me?”

Vanessa laughed too.

“Your location is on.”

“Remember?”

“Right.”

“I forgot.”

My blood turned cold at the word.

Forgot.

She had trained the language into him.

Vanessa continued.

“Come home.”

“Adrian is stopping by early.”

“We should discuss Friday.”

“I’ll be there.”

Daniel hung up.

Samuel closed the laptop.

“We have enough to open an investigation.”

“Then do it.”

Daniel said.

Samuel hesitated.

“There is another problem.”

“What?”

“Harrington called while you were driving here.”

He looked at Daniel.

“The financial proxy request was not the only document.”

Daniel went still.

“What else?”

Samuel slid a paper across the desk.

It was a copy of a notarized agreement.

Daniel’s signature appeared at the bottom.

He stared at it.

“I never saw this.”

Samuel nodded.

“I assumed not.”

“What is it?”

Samuel’s face was grim.

“It grants Vanessa temporary authority over several categories of your personal assets if you are determined unable to manage them.”

Daniel looked up.

“Determined by whom?”

Samuel tapped the document.

“Two physicians.”

“One of whom is already named.”

I read the name.

Dr. Peter Lang.

Daniel shook his head.

“I’ve never met him.”

Samuel looked at us both.

May you like

“I know.”

“He is Adrian Cross’s brother-in-law.”
