Chapter 13 - The Wedding That Became a Trap

By Saturday morning, there was no wedding.

There was a stage.

Vanessa agreed to help.

Daniel did not forgive her.

That distinction mattered.

The ceremony continued publicly because Adrian still believed he had control of the Bellamy transfer.

News outlets had already covered the accelerated wedding.

Guests had arrived.

Flowers filled the estate.

Security disguised as catering staff stood at every entrance.

Investigators monitored every phone connected to the property.

Vanessa wore her wedding gown.

She stood alone in the dressing room.

I entered.

She looked at me through the mirror.

“You must hate me.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“I understand.”

“But I don’t want you dead.”

She turned.

“Is that supposed to comfort me?”

“No.”

“It is supposed to tell you the difference between us.”

Her eyes filled.

“I loved Daniel.”

I looked at her.

“Then today you prove it.”

She nodded.

The plan depended on one thing.

Adrian believed Vanessa was still loyal.

She had contacted him through the hidden phone.

She told him Daniel suspected Eleanor but had agreed to sign the final transfer immediately after the ceremony.

Adrian responded exactly as investigators hoped.

Be sure Eleanor signs the foundation consent.

If she refuses, use the backup.

We did not know what backup meant.

That frightened everyone.

Twenty minutes before the ceremony, Vanessa received another message.

Change.

Have Daniel sign before vows.

She showed Samuel.

“He knows.”

she whispered.

Samuel shook his head.

“He suspects.”

Another message arrived.

Library.

Now.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

He was standing across the room in his tuxedo.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

Not bride and groom.

Not enemies.

Two people standing over the ruins of something that might once have been real.

Daniel nodded.

“Go.”

Vanessa walked into the library.

The room appeared empty.

Then Adrian stepped from behind the curtains.

I watched through the security feed upstairs.

He looked older than his photographs.

Harder.

Vanessa froze.

“You came.”

Adrian smiled.

“You sound surprised.”

“You said you were leaving the country.”

“I changed my mind.”

He handed her a document.

“Get Daniel’s signature.”

“Now.”

Vanessa looked at it.

“What is it?”

“You know what it is.”

“No.”

“The final transfer.”

She scanned the pages.

Her face changed.

“This transfers everything.”

“Bellamy.”

“Foundation voting rights.”

“Daniel’s discretionary assets.”

Adrian smiled.

“Only temporarily.”

“You told me this was about Bellamy.”

“It was.”

“Then I learned Daniel’s trust was more vulnerable than expected.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You were going to take everything.”

“Don’t become sentimental.”

“You were going to leave me with him.”

“He loves you.”

“You could have kept him comfortable.”

Vanessa’s hands began shaking.

“What did you do to Charles Whitmore?”

The smile left Adrian’s face.

Upstairs, Daniel stopped breathing.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Careful.”

“Dad didn’t commit the fraud.”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“You did.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Who told you?”

“Charles.”

Adrian froze.

Just slightly.

Vanessa continued.

“He recorded it.”

“You framed Dad.”

“Dad was weak.”

“You destroyed him.”

“He was already destroying himself.”

“You let me spend twenty years hating the wrong man.”

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

Daniel moved toward the door upstairs.

An investigator stopped him.

Vanessa winced.

“Let go.”

Adrian tightened his grip.

“You were useful because you believed.”

“Do not become useless now.”

Daniel’s face changed.

I knew that expression.

I had seen it once when he was seventeen and a drunk man insulted me outside a restaurant.

He was about to forget the plan.

I grabbed his arm.

“She chose to do this.”

His eyes remained on the screen.

Adrian shoved the document toward Vanessa.

“Get the signature.”

“No.”

His face hardened.

“No?”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“No.”

Adrian laughed.

“Then you really did fall in love with him.”

“Yes.”

The word was quiet.

But Daniel heard it.

We all did.

Adrian released her wrist.

“Pathetic.”

Then he pulled out his phone.

He pressed something.

Every light in the library went out.

The security screen turned black.

Daniel ripped free of the investigator.

“Vanessa!”

We ran downstairs.

The library doors were locked.

Security forced them open.

Inside, the room was empty.

The garden doors stood open.

Vanessa and Adrian were gone.

On the floor lay the unsigned transfer agreement.

And beside it was Vanessa’s engagement ring.

Daniel picked it up.

Then his phone buzzed.

A video message appeared.

Adrian was inside a moving vehicle.

Vanessa sat beside him.

Her hands were bound in front of her.

Adrian smiled into the camera.

“Daniel.”

May you like

“You wanted your bride.”

“Now you can buy her back.”
