Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Knew Everything

I stared at the photograph.
It showed me leaving Samuel’s building.
The timestamp was printed in the corner.
3:42 p.m.
Vanessa had known where I was.
More importantly, she wanted me to know that she knew.
“Who took this?”
She shrugged.
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“It should.”
Vanessa tilted her head.
“You really think Daniel is going to forgive you when he learns you hired lawyers to investigate his fiancée?”
“I did not hire anyone to investigate you.”
“Yet.”
“You seem very worried that I might.”
Her eyes hardened.
For once, neither of us pretended.
“What do you want?”
I asked.
Vanessa leaned against the doorframe.
“I want you to stop.”
“Stop what?”
“Digging.”
“Questioning.”
“Whispering to staff.”
“Trying to turn Daniel against me.”
“You’re doing that perfectly well on your own.”
She smiled.
“No.”
“I’m turning him against you.”
The cruelty of the admission was almost impressive.
“Why?”
“Because you make it easy.”
“Daniel loves you.”
“Exactly.”
“That is why he still defends you.”
“For now.”
I stared into her eyes.
“You don’t love him.”
Something moved across her face.
Not guilt.
Annoyance.
“You have no idea what I feel.”
“I know you photographed his trust records.”
“I know you lied about it.”
“I know you asked how his inheritance works before you ever met me.”
“And I know the name Adrian Cross.”
That changed everything.
Vanessa’s face emptied.
No smile.
No tears.
No performance.
Just stillness.
I had finally struck something real.
“Who told you that name?”
she asked.
“Good night, Vanessa.”
I began closing the door.
Her hand shot forward and stopped it.
“Who told you?”
I looked down at her fingers.
“Remove your hand.”
She did.
Slowly.
“You’re making a mistake.”
“No.”
“You made one.”
I closed the door.
My hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From certainty.
The next morning, Vanessa made her move.
At breakfast, Daniel barely looked at me.
Vanessa sat beside him.
Her eyes were swollen.
Perfectly swollen.
She looked like she had cried for hours.
Daniel placed a folder on the table.
“What is this?”
I asked.
He looked at me.
“Did you hire Samuel to investigate Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Did you ask him about her?”
“Yes.”
Daniel shut his eyes.
Vanessa whispered,
“I told you.”
I looked at my son.
“Daniel.”
“You had me followed?”
“No.”
Vanessa reached toward him.
“Don’t.”
Daniel pulled away from her hand.
For one hopeful second, I thought he was angry with her.
Then he looked at me.
“I told you she matters to me.”
“She does.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
“Because something is wrong.”
“What?”
“Give me one thing.”
“One real thing.”
“Not instinct.”
“Not the way she looks at paintings.”
“Not questions you don’t like.”
“Give me something.”
I could have said Adrian’s name.
But without evidence, Vanessa would explain him away.
And now she knew I knew.
I needed more.
So I said,
“I’m trying to protect you.”
Daniel stood.
“That is the problem.”
“You’ve been protecting me since Dad died.”
“I was sixteen.”
“I needed it then.”
“I’m forty-one now.”
Vanessa kept her eyes lowered.
He continued.
“I don’t need you deciding who deserves to be in my life.”
“I am not deciding.”
“You already decided.”
He picked up the folder.
“I’m taking a leave from the foundation.”
My chest tightened.
“What?”
“Until after the wedding.”
“Daniel.”
“I’m tired of every decision becoming a fight.”
“I want space.”
Vanessa looked surprised.
I did not believe her surprise for one second.
“This is what she wants.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“And there it is.”
“You can’t even let me make one decision without blaming her.”
He walked away.
Vanessa followed.
At the door, she looked back at me.
Just once.
And smiled.
Three days later, Daniel returned.
He was not alone.
A man entered the foundation boardroom beside him.
Tall.
Gray suit.
Silver tie.
Dark hair.
Expensive watch.
Controlled face.
Vanessa walked behind them.
Daniel introduced him.
“This is Adrian Cross.”
My entire body went cold.
Adrian extended his hand.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
“I’ve heard a great deal about you.”
I did not take his hand.
Daniel noticed.
“Mom.”
Adrian lowered it gracefully.
Vanessa smiled.
“Adrian is helping us restructure the Bellamy financing.”
“No.”
Daniel stared at me.
“What?”
“He is not touching our finances.”
Adrian remained calm.
“I understand your concern.”
“No.”
“You don’t.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What exactly is your problem with him?”
I looked at Adrian.
Then at Vanessa.
She gave me nothing.
I turned back to my son.
“My problem is that he has been connected to Vanessa for years.”
Daniel blinked.
Vanessa’s face filled with hurt.
“I told you that.”
He looked at her.
“When?”
“This morning.”
She glanced at me.
“I knew your mother would twist it.”
Adrian sighed.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
“Vanessa worked for my firm.”
“She was excellent.”
“Our professional history is no secret.”
Daniel folded his arms.
“So this is what Samuel found?”
I realized too late that Vanessa had anticipated everything.
She had confessed first.
Only the harmless part.
Now anything I said would sound like exaggeration.
“There were lawsuits.”
I said.
Adrian’s face remained calm.
Daniel looked at him.
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
“There were.”
“Neither involved wrongdoing by Vanessa.”
“Both were dismissed.”
“Settled.”
I corrected.
“Settlements are not guilt.”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“See?”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Mom, please.”
Adrian placed a document on the table.
“We are here to save the Bellamy project.”
He opened the folder.
“I can secure the remaining financing within ten business days.”
I stared at the numbers.
The offer was extraordinary.
Too extraordinary.
“What does your investor receive?”
I asked.
“Eight percent preferred return.”
“Impossible.”
Adrian smiled.
“Difficult.”
“Not impossible.”
“Who is the investor?”
“Confidential until due diligence is complete.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice tightened.
“Mom.”
“No anonymous money enters this foundation.”
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Then sixty-eight families lose housing because you don’t like me.”
I looked at her.
The room fell silent.
There it was.
Exactly as planned.
If I rejected Adrian, I was selfish.
If I accepted him, he entered our finances.
Daniel looked at the documents.
Then at me.
“I’m voting yes.”
I felt something break.
Not between us.
Inside the structure my husband and I had built.
Daniel controlled enough board votes to force a review.
Vanessa knew that.
Adrian knew that.
And suddenly I understood something else.
This had never started when Vanessa met Daniel.
She had known exactly who he was before they met.
I looked directly at Adrian.
“You chose him.”
His eyes flickered.
Only once.
But it was enough.
Vanessa went completely still.
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
I did not answer.
Because through the glass wall of the boardroom, I saw Rosa standing in the corridor.
Her face was white.
She held a phone in her hand.
She motioned urgently toward me.
I stepped outside.
“What happened?”
Rosa whispered,
“I found the missing envelope.”
My heart jumped.
“Where?”
She looked toward Vanessa.
“In Vanessa’s suitcase.”
Then she added the words that changed the entire battle.
“And Eleanor.”
May you like
“There was something else inside.”
“A photocopy of Daniel’s signature.”
