Chapter 11 - The Man Behind Vanessa

Adrian Cross had vanished by the time investigators reached Bellamy.

But he left something behind.

A signed deed.

A forged board resolution.

And enough documents to make it appear that our foundation had voluntarily sold a two-hundred-million-dollar redevelopment interest for less than one-third of its projected value.

The buyer was a company called North Harbor Development.

North Harbor had existed for eighteen months.

Its ownership disappeared behind layers of holding companies.

Samuel traced one.

Then another.

By midnight, we reached the fifth.

The beneficial owner was not Adrian.

It was Dr. Peter Lang.

Daniel stared at the report.

“So the doctor owns the company?”

“On paper.”

Samuel replied.

“Which means Adrian designed several layers between himself and the asset.”

Vanessa sat across the table under supervision.

She looked stunned.

“He told me North Harbor belonged to investors in Dubai.”

Samuel laughed coldly.

“He lied.”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“I didn’t know.”

Daniel did not answer.

The silence was worse than anger.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered Rosa.

“Where is she?”

I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Who?”

“Rosa.”

“I don’t know.”

“You forced her out.”

“Yes.”

My hands tightened.

“How?”

“I threatened to accuse her of stealing jewelry.”

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

She continued before I could speak.

“I told her if she stayed, I would file a police report.”

“She left to protect her family.”

“Where?”

“She said she had a sister in New Mexico.”

I stood.

“You terrified a woman who had served this family for twenty-seven years.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

That single answer enraged me more than any excuse could have.

I leaned across the table.

“You will repair that.”

Her eyes lifted.

“If she allows you to speak to her.”

“You will tell her what you did.”

“You will tell my son what you did.”

“You will tell every employee you pushed out.”

“And then you will spend the rest of your life understanding that revenge against a dead man never gave you permission to destroy innocent people.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“My father was innocent.”

“Then prove it.”

“Do not become Adrian to punish Charles.”

That silenced her.

At 2:14 a.m., Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

He answered on speaker.

Adrian’s voice filled the room.

“Daniel.”

Everyone froze.

Samuel motioned to the investigators.

They began tracing.

Daniel forced his voice steady.

“Where are you?”

“You sound angry.”

“You forged my signature.”

Adrian laughed.

“Your signature has been useful.”

Vanessa whispered,

“You used me.”

Silence.

Then Adrian laughed again.

“Vanessa.”

“I was wondering when they’d let you speak.”

Her face twisted.

“You said no one would get hurt.”

“No one has.”

“You destroyed everything.”

“You destroyed it the moment you started feeling guilty.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She shut her eyes.

Adrian continued.

“You always were weak.”

That word changed her.

Vanessa stood.

“You told me Charles Whitmore stole the Meridian land.”

“He did.”

“You said Bellamy was part of it.”

“It was.”

Samuel whispered,

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

Adrian went silent.

Samuel stared at the property map.

“Bellamy was never owned by Meridian.”

Vanessa’s face drained.

“What?”

Samuel pulled up historical records.

“Charles bought Bellamy six years after Meridian collapsed.”

“Through an unrelated trust.”

Adrian had stopped speaking.

I looked at the phone.

“You lied to her.”

Adrian finally answered.

“Hello, Eleanor.”

My skin turned cold.

“We’ve never met.”

“Oh, yes.”

“We have.”

I frowned.

“When?”

“Twenty-seven years ago.”

Samuel’s face changed.

I looked at him.

He knew.

“Samuel?”

Adrian laughed.

“Tell her.”

Samuel sat slowly.

“Adrian Cross used to be Adrian Cole.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“No.”

Adrian’s voice softened.

“Hello, little sister.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

The room went completely silent.

She whispered,

“My brother died.”

“No.”

Adrian said.

“Your mother told you I did.”

“She took me away because your father was destroying us.”

Vanessa began shaking.

“You’re lying.”

“I’ve lied about many things.”

“Not that.”

Daniel stared between them.

Adrian continued.

“You wanted revenge.”

“I wanted the land.”

“We helped each other.”

“No.”

Vanessa gripped the table.

“You told me Dad was innocent.”

“He was.”

“You told me Charles stole Meridian.”

“He did.”

“But Bellamy?”

Silence.

Vanessa screamed his name.

“Adrian!”

He answered calmly.

“Bellamy was mine long before it was yours.”

Samuel looked at me.

His face was horrified.

Then Adrian said,

“Ask Eleanor’s husband.”

My throat tightened.

“He’s dead.”

“I know.”

“That was convenient.”

Every person in the room went still.

Daniel stared at the phone.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian laughed once.

Then the call ended.

The trace failed.

No one spoke.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom.”

“Was Dad’s death really a heart attack?”

I opened my mouth.

May you like

Before I could answer, Samuel whispered,

“No.”
