Chapter 2 - The Trigger and the Truth

"Everyone stay in your seats if you want to walk out of here alive," Richard ordered, sweeping the barrel across the front three rows.

Screams erupted as elderly relatives dove under the wooden pews. Detective Vance reached instinctively for his service holster, but Richard snapped the muzzle back onto Vance instantly.

"Hands on your head, Vance! Throw your piece under the pew or the kid takes the first hollow-point!"

Vance cursed, unholstering his firearm with two fingers and sliding it across the polished marble. "Richard, put the gun down. Look at what you're doing. She’s alive! Whatever this is, we can figure it out."

"There’s nothing to figure out," Richard sneered, his mask completely gone. "The estate trust clears at five o'clock today. The life insurance policy is sixty million dollars. She was never supposed to wake up before the furnace at the crematorium."

Claire let out a muffled, frantic scream from inside the box, bucking against her bindings.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the altar and hurled it at Richard's head.

Richard ducked, the candle smashing into the stained-glass window behind him. BANG! A bullet tore through the wooden casket right beside Claire’s ear, sending wood chips flying.

"Ethan, run!" Claire’s muffled voice broke through the tape as she managed to kick the cracked lid off entirely, rolling her body over the edge and crashing onto the sanctuary floor.

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Vance tackled Richard around the waist just as a second shot blew through the ceiling plaster.

"Ethan, get your mother out the back!" Vance roared, struggling to pin Richard’s gun arm to the ground.

Ethan didn't look back. He grabbed his mother by her bruised arms, tearing the duct tape from her mouth with a single hard yank.

Claire gasped, coughing violently, her lips bloody. "Ethan... Ethan, the flash drive in my locket... don't let him get it!"

Before Ethan could answer, the sharp crack of another gunshot silenced the sanctuary. Detective Vance slumped over Richard, motionless, a dark red circle blooming across his white dress shirt.

Richard shoved the officer's body aside, blood dripping down his own forehead, and locked his eyes on Ethan.

"You should've let her sleep, kid."
