Chapter 10 - The Shadow in the Ash

The roar of the blaze turned the night sky into a churn of orange sparks and black smoke. Rain sizzled against the red-hot remains of the cabin's timber frame. Ethan stood frozen on the lawn, the grass slick under his torn sneakers, staring at the shattered window frame where the silhouette moved through the smoke.

Federal agents in black tactical gear poured from their armored trucks, shouting commands through bullhorns, their rifle lights cutting through the blinding haze.

"Mom!" Ethan screamed, his voice cracking against the wind. "Mom!"

The silhouette stumbled forward over the splintered sill, tumbling hard onto the wet dirt.

It was Claire.

Her hands were charred, her burial dress shredded and blackened with soot, but her chest rose and fell in ragged, desperate gasps. Behind her, the center beam of the cabin gave way with a thunderous crash, dropping tons of blazing rafters right where she had stood seconds before.

"Ethan..." Claire choked out, reaching for him through the mud.

Ethan dropped to his knees, throwing his arms around her neck. He held on with everything he had left, burying his face into her shoulder as the trembling in his limbs took over. "You made it. You got out."

"Step back! Hands where we can see them!"

Three federal tactical officers moved in, weapons lowered slightly as they recognized the boy and the woman matching the alert images that had just pinged their mobile data terminals. A senior agent with graying hair and an FBI windbreaker knelt beside Claire, pressing his fingers to her pulse.

"Mrs. Parker? I’m Special Agent Hayes," the man said, pulling a foil shock blanket around her trembling shoulders. "We received your broadcast packet three minutes ago. State dispatch has locked down every road in the county."

"Richard..." Claire coughed, pointing a shaking finger back toward the burning wreckage. "He was right behind me. He had a backup plan... the eastern landing strip."

Before Agent Hayes could answer, a loud engine revved from the darkness behind the burning boathouse. Headlights snapped on through the pine grove.

An all-terrain utility vehicle burst through the fence line, spraying mud across the lawn as it sped away from the perimeter towards the old logging runway behind the ridge.

Behind the wheel was Richard, his face half-burned, his eyes fixed on the treeline.

"He's heading for the twin-engine Cessna at the private runway!" Ethan yelled, gripping Agent Hayes' arm. "He kept an unregistered plane there for his shell company!"

Hayes grabbed his radio, shouting coordinates into the mic as sirens wailed across the lakefront. "All units, target is mobile in a utility cart heading east toward Runway Four! Block the tarmac! Do not let that aircraft get airborne!"
