Chapter 12 - The Confession in the Rain

The twin engines sputtered, choked, and died, leaving only the sound of heavy rain drumming against the twisted fuselage.
Smoke poured from the shattered right wing. Inside the tilted cockpit, Richard was trapped behind a collapsed steering yoke, his forehead split open, coughing blood onto the windshield glass.
Agent Hayes moved in with his sidearm drawn, sweeping the broken cabin door open and clearing the weapon from Richard's limp fingers. Tactical backup cruisers surrounded the wreck, high-powered searchlights pinning the broken man in a blinding circle of white light.
Claire walked slowly across the tarmac, her hand holding Ethan's. She stopped at the edge of the cockpit door, looking down at the man who had tried to bury her alive.
"The money is gone, Richard," Claire said, her voice cutting through the hum of the idling squad cars. "The federal marshals froze all seventy offshore accounts ten minutes ago. Dr. Mercer is in custody. Deputy Miller survived his burns—and he’s already singing to the prosecutors."
Richard looked up through one swollen eye, a ragged, bitter laugh escaping his throat. "You... you were supposed to be six feet under by sundown, Claire. You were dead on paper. I had every signature."
"You forgot one thing," Claire replied quietly.
Richard blinked through the blood running into his eyes. "What?"
Claire pointed to Ethan, who stood beside her in the pouring rain, soaking wet, bleeding from his brow, his jaw set like stone.
"You forgot that my son knows when I'm calling for him."
State troopers pulled Richard from the wreckage, snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists and reading him his constitutional rights as he was dragged toward the back of a secure transport van.

Ethan watched the doors slam shut on Richard’s face. The heavy lock clicked into place with a definitive, hollow thud.
For the first time in three days, the crushing weight in Ethan’s chest lifted.
