Chapter 13 - Breaking the Ring

By dawn, the storm had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, pale blue sky over the county courthouse.

Ethan sat in the federal briefing room wrapped in a clean fleece blanket, sipping hot chocolate while Agent Hayes spread thick folders across the mahogany table. Claire sat beside Ethan, her hands bandaged, giving her official sworn statement to a court stenographer.

"The evidence package you transmitted from the cabin was exhaustive, Mrs. Parker," Hayes said, adjusting his glasses as he reviewed the printouts. "It wasn't just Richard. We’ve already executed thirty-four arrest warrants across three state agencies."

The locket's encrypted drive had contained years of meticulous records:

Bribe ledgers linking Richard to county judges, coroners, and local law enforcement.

Audio recordings of staged insurance claims and deliberately arranged industrial accidents.

Video proof showing Dr. Mercer administering the paralytic cocktail to Claire in the private ambulance after her staged car crash.

"Mercer confessed everything an hour ago," Hayes continued. "He admitted that Richard promised him an eight-figure cut of the sixty-million-dollar estate trust once the cremation was certified and the urn was placed in the family vault."

Ethan looked at the photos of the suspects laid out on the table. Every single adult who had told him to sit down, stay quiet, and accept his mother’s death was now in federal holding cells facing charges of attempted capital murder, kidnapping, and organized racketeering.

"What happens to the house?" Ethan asked quietly.

"The lake house is gone, son," Hayes said gently. "But the estate itself is completely secure under your mother’s name. None of Richard's dummy corporations will ever touch a single cent."

Claire put her arm around Ethan’s shoulders, pulling him close. "The house was just wood and nails, Ethan. We’re going to build something new. Somewhere far away from this valley."

Agent Hayes smiled, closing the thick folder with a satisfying snap. "Your transport to the federal safe house in Seattle is waiting outside, Mrs. Parker. You two are officially going home."
