Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO STOOD BESIDE ME

I wanted to hate Adrian.

It would have been easier.

Anger was simple.

Betrayal was not.

Because the worst part was not discovering he lied.

The worst part was realizing I had spent years loving someone who never truly saw me.

I was not his wife.

I was a solution.

A locked box.

A piece of property.

A way to save his family.

Maya touched my arm.

“Claire.”

I moved away.

“I need to know everything.”

She nodded.

“You deserve that.”

I looked at Adrian.

“Start talking.”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he finally sat down.

“My grandfather created a company called Caldwell Urban Holdings.”

I listened.

“Twenty years ago, they invested in a major San Francisco redevelopment project.”

“The project failed.”

“They lost millions.”

“But instead of admitting it…”

Maya finished.

“They created fake financial reports.”

Adrian nodded.

“They convinced investors the company was still healthy.”

My stomach turned.

“And my condo?”

“The building was one of their last remaining assets.”

I frowned.

“But I bought my unit.”

“Yes.”

“Legally.”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

Adrian looked at the file.

“When the company collapsed, my grandfather hid the original contracts.”

“And one of those contracts proves everything?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Adrian hesitated.

Then Maya answered.

“In your condo.”

I stared at both of them.

“You are telling me my home has been hiding evidence for years?”

“Yes.”

“And your family tried to force me out because they wanted it?”

“Yes.”

I laughed.

But there was no humor.

“So the dinner was never about Eleanor needing a place to live.”

“No.”

“It was about searching my home.”

Adrian looked away.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

The pain from the plate suddenly felt smaller than the betrayal.

Because the wound on my head would heal.

But the truth would never leave.

A sound came from upstairs.

Maya immediately stood.

“What was that?”

Adrian looked toward the stairs.

His face changed.

“What?”

“You are not the only one who knows about this place.”

Before anyone moved, the basement door opened.

A woman appeared.

Eleanor.

My mother-in-law.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

“You always were difficult, Claire.”

I stared at her.

“You sent him.”

She smiled.

“I gave him an opportunity.”

“An opportunity to attack me?”

Her expression hardened.

“Do not exaggerate.”

I looked at Maya.

Even she looked shocked.

Eleanor stepped closer.

“You have no idea what you are destroying.”

“No.”

I replied.

“You have no idea what you destroyed.”

She ignored me.

“Give me the files.”

I almost smiled.

“No.”

Her face changed.

“You really think you have won?”

“I think you are afraid.”

For the first time, her confidence cracked.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You have no idea who you are dealing with.”

I looked at the documents.

Then at her.

“No.”

May you like

I said quietly.

“I finally do.”
