Chapter 12 - THE MESSAGE FROM THE PAST

The next morning, Detective Hill arrived at my condo.

He carried a small evidence box.

“This was recovered from a hidden compartment.”

I stared at it.

“Where?”

“In the original wall structure behind your living room.”

I felt a chill.

My home had been hiding secrets longer than I knew.

He opened the box.

Inside was a small recording device.

Old.

Dusty.

But still intact.

“What is that?”

“We believe it belonged to Thomas Caldwell.”

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then an elderly man’s voice appeared.

A voice from the past.

“If you are hearing this…”

A pause.

“Then my family failed to destroy the truth.”

I sat completely still.

Thomas continued.

“My name is Thomas Caldwell.”

“I created the company that became the Caldwell empire.”

“But I also created the mistake that destroyed countless lives.”

The recording continued.

“I believed money could fix everything.”

“I was wrong.”

“Money only hides mistakes until someone brave enough exposes them.”

My eyes moved toward Detective Hill.

He listened silently.

Thomas continued.

“The person who owns the Mission Bay property must know something.”

I leaned closer.

“The Caldwell family does not own the future.”

“They only borrowed it.”

A pause.

Then:

“The real ownership records are not in the documents.”

“They are in the land itself.”

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Detective Hill looked at me.

The recording continued.

“The final proof is beneath the foundation.”

“The foundation of the original Caldwell building.”

I felt confused.

“The building where my condo is located?”

Detective Hill nodded slowly.

Thomas’ voice became quieter.

“If my family discovers this message…”

“They will try to take everything.”

“Your home.”

“Your name.”

“Your freedom.”

A long silence followed.

Then his final words came.

“Trust no Caldwell.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because the meaning was clear.

The condo was never just a property.

It was a vault.

A vault containing the final evidence of everything the Caldwell family had done.

And now they knew we had found the message.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice whispered.

“Claire Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“You need to leave your condo immediately.”

My body froze.

“Who is this?”

The voice became urgent.

“They are coming for you.”

“Who?”

A pause.

Then the answer:

“The people who killed the truth once.”

The call ended.

And for the first time since the night Adrian attacked me…

I realized something terrifying.

The Caldwell family was not finished.

May you like

They were desperate.

And desperate people were the most dangerous kind.
