Chapter 4 - THE DEAL BEHIND MY BACK

Adrian stood in the basement surrounded by the evidence his family had spent years hiding.
For the first time since I married him, I saw him clearly.
Not the charming man who brought me coffee every morning.
Not the husband who held my hand at family events.
Not the man who promised me we would build a future together.
I saw the person underneath.
A man who had watched his family plan my financial destruction.
A man who had attacked me when I refused.
A man who was still more worried about losing money than losing me.
“You knew,” I whispered.
Adrian did not answer.
He simply looked at the files in my hands.
“You knew they were trying to take my condo.”
His jaw tightened.
“I knew they needed it.”
“That is not an answer.”
He stepped closer.
“You do not understand the situation.”
I almost laughed.
“I understand perfectly.”
“No.”
His voice became sharper.
“You understand your side.”
“My family built everything they have.”
“Your family built a lie.”
His expression changed.
For a moment, anger returned.
But then he controlled it.
That scared me more.
Because rage was easy to predict.
Control was not.
“You think you are better than us because you bought one apartment?”
I stared at him.
“One apartment?”
I looked around the basement.
“At least my success is real.”
Silence.
Maya looked down.
Because she knew I had said the one thing Adrian could not accept.
The Caldwell family did not fear losing their money.
They feared people discovering they never truly earned it.
Adrian walked toward one of the shelves.
“You have no idea what my family sacrificed.”
I followed him with my eyes.
“What did they sacrifice?”
He picked up an old folder.
“Everything.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I shook my head.
“They sacrificed honesty.”
“They sacrificed other people.”
“They sacrificed anyone who got in their way.”
Adrian slammed the folder onto the table.
“You think this is simple?”
“No.”
I answered immediately.
“I think it is disgusting.”
His eyes narrowed.
Then he said something I never expected.
“My father did not create this problem.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“My grandfather did.”
The room became quiet.
Adrian looked at the documents.
“The Caldwell name was built on secrets.”
Maya whispered.
“Adrian.”
But he continued.
“The vineyard was never profitable.”
“The estate was never fully paid for.”
“The investments were failing.”
“So they borrowed.”
“And borrowed again.”
“And when they could not repay…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“What happened?”
Adrian looked at me.
“They started using other people.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
He looked away.
“Fake partnerships.”
“Hidden debts.”
“Manipulated contracts.”
“And then…”
He swallowed.
“They found a way to make everything disappear.”
I stared at him.
“How?”
He did not answer.
Maya did.
“Through Claire’s condo.”
I turned toward her.
Adrian looked angry.
But he did not deny it.
Maya continued.
“Your property is connected to a company.”
“What company?”
She looked at Adrian.
“Tell her.”
He stayed silent.
“Tell her the truth.”
Finally, Adrian spoke.
“The company that owns the building where your condo is located…”
He paused.
“Was founded by my grandfather.”
I felt my heart drop.
“What?”
“But your condo was sold legally to you.”
“Yes.”
“Your ownership is protected.”
“Then why do you need it?”
Adrian looked at the floor.
“Because your unit contains something my family needs.”
I felt a chill.
“What?”
“A document.”
“What document?”
He looked at me.
“The original agreement that proves my grandfather committed fraud.”
The basement suddenly felt smaller.
“You knew this entire time?”
“Yes.”
“And you married me because of it?”
May you like
He did not answer.
That was the answer.
