Chapter 3 - THE FILES UNDER THE VINEYARD

I returned to the Caldwell estate the following evening.
Not because I trusted Maya.
Because I needed answers.
The police had not arrested Adrian yet.
Not because they believed him.
Because the investigation required more evidence.
The Caldwell family had lawyers.
Powerful ones.
The kind who could turn a violent attack into a misunderstanding.
But evidence was different.
Evidence did not care about money.
Evidence did not care about family names.
Evidence simply existed.
I parked my car outside the vineyard.
The estate looked different.
The same beautiful gardens.
The same expensive stone pathways.
The same perfect view.
But now I saw what was underneath.
A beautiful mask.
Nothing more.
Maya was waiting near the old wine storage building.
She looked exhausted.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
She looked toward the house.
“Before we go inside, I need you to understand something.”
“What?”
“You cannot trust anyone in that family.”
I looked at her.
“Not even you?”
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“I understand why you would say that.”
She reached into her coat.
Then she handed me a small key.
“What is this?”
“The basement key.”
I stared at it.
“Why do you have it?”
“Because I found it years ago.”
“And you never told anyone?”
She looked away.
“I was scared.”
We walked toward the hidden entrance.
The basement door was behind a wall of old wine crates.
Maya moved several boxes aside.
The lock was old.
The key turned easily.
The door opened.
A cold smell rushed out.
Dust.
Paper.
Old wood.
And something else.
Fear.
We stepped inside.
The basement was larger than I expected.
Shelves covered every wall.
Boxes filled every corner.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Financial records.
Maya turned on the lights.
“This is where they kept everything.”
I walked closer.
“What is everything?”
She opened one box.
Inside were folders.
Hundreds of them.
Each labeled with names.
I picked up the first folder.
My heart stopped.
It had Adrian’s name.
I opened it.
Bank records.
Private transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Then I found another folder.
Eleanor Caldwell.
Another.
Charles Caldwell.
The deeper I searched, the worse it became.
“They were hiding money.”
Maya nodded.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Millions.”
I opened another document.
Then I froze.
Because my name was written on it.
Claire Bennett.
My hands went cold.
“What is this?”
Maya looked terrified.
“I was hoping you would never find that.”
I opened the file.
Inside was a copy of my property records.
My condo address.
My mortgage details.
My income.
My investments.
Everything.
They had been tracking me.
For years.
“They were planning this.”
Maya nodded.
“They were waiting.”
“For what?”
She looked directly at me.
“For Adrian to convince you.”
My chest tightened.
“And when I refused?”
Maya looked toward the basement door.
“When you refused…”
She stopped.
“What?”
Her voice became barely audible.
“That was when they decided to stop asking.”
A sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Maya’s face turned pale.
Someone was entering the basement.
We turned toward the stairs.
A shadow appeared.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
“Looking for something?”
Adrian stood at the entrance.
His expression was completely different from the man at dinner.
No anger.
No panic.
Only coldness.
Maya stepped backward.
“Adrian…”
He smiled.
A smile that made my blood run cold.
“You really should have stayed quiet.”
He looked at me.
Then at the files in my hands.
“Because now you know the truth.”
I tightened my grip on the folder.
“What truth?”
Adrian slowly walked down the stairs.
“The truth that your little condo was never just a condo.”
He stopped in front of me.
“It was the last piece of the Caldwell empire.”
The basement lights flickered.
May you like
And Adrian said the words that changed everything.
“Your name is the reason my family is about to lose everything.”
