Chapter 6 - The Trap Shuts

Judge Croft stepped into the cold storage room, his tailored wool coat untouched by the rain. He was a tall, imposing man in his late sixties, with snow-white hair, steely blue eyes, and the calm, unhurried posture of a man who owned every courtroom in the county.

"You always were too sentimental for your own good, Mark," Croft said smoothly, stopping five feet from the autopsy table. "Claire had the same defect. She thought morality mattered more than institutional longevity."

"You murdered her," I said, keeping my hands visible, the camera clutched in my left palm. "Vanessa shoved her down the stairs, and you cleaned up the mess."

"Vanessa acted impulsively," Croft replied without an ounce of shame. "My daughter has an unfortunate temper when she’s cornered. But what followed was purely administrative. Claire was going to derail a forty-million-dollar state redevelopment corridor over some minor regulatory discrepancies. We couldn't allow that."

"The whole county is going to see the video," I spat. "The server was mirrored. It's already in the hands of federal prosecutors."

Sheriff Vance chuckled from the doorway, stepping forward and holding up Leo Carter’s shattered smartphone.

"You mean your buddy Leo Carter?" Vance asked with a cruel smirk. "Leo was picked up at a roadblock near the interstate fifteen minutes ago. He didn't make it to the state line, Mark. The thumb drive is at the bottom of the river, and Leo is currently in holding on suspicion of child kidnapping."

My heart dropped into my stomach like lead. "Where is Ilaria?"

"Your daughter is safe," Judge Croft said softly, taking a step closer. "Vanessa is taking excellent care of her back at the family estate. In fact, Vanessa is officially filing for temporary emergency custody as of midnight. Given your current state of mind—breaking into a county morgue, harassing municipal staff, fleeing a lawful welfare check—the court will find you completely unfit. You'll spend the next ten years in a state psychiatric facility."

"You touch my daughter and I will tear your throat out," I snarled, tensing my legs to lunge.

Click.

Vance raised his service weapon, pointing the barrel directly between my eyes. "Try it, Mark. Please. I’d love to write this up as a justified shooting of an unhinged trespasser."

Judge Croft signaled Vance to lower the weapon. "No need for mess, Sheriff. Mark is going to sign a voluntary confession and surrender his parental rights. In exchange, Ilaria will receive the finest private medical care Croft money can buy. If he refuses... well, accidents happen to fragile little girls in wheelchairs all the time. A slipped brake on the terrace, a sudden drop into the pool..."

The sheer malice in his voice made my blood turn to ice.

"You monster," I whispered.

"I am a realist, Mark," Croft replied, extending his leather-gloved hand toward me. "Now, hand over the camera, put your hands behind your back, and let's go negotiate your daughter's future."

I looked at the judge. I looked at Vance’s gun. Then I looked down at the metal tray holding Claire’s body.

Beneath the edge of the steel sheet, my fingers felt the cold, heavy handle of the surgical bone saw sitting on the autopsy tray behind me.

I made my choice.
