Chapter 13 - What the Lake Kept

The dawn broke over Lake Moraine in pale shades of charcoal and amber. The storm had passed, leaving behind a dead, eerie calm that hovered over the dark water.
Cables groaned under extreme tension as a heavy crane truck hoisted the rusted chassis of a black sedan from the depths. Water poured from the shattered windows, cascading back into the lake in thick, muddy torrents.
I stood by the edge of the dock, holding Ilaria securely in my arms. Leo stood beside us, sipping black coffee from a paper cup.
The crane dropped the dripping sedan onto the gravel apron. Federal technicians in white hazmat suits moved forward with hydraulic spreaders, prying open the mangled trunk lid with a sharp metallic screech.
Inside lay three heavy steel lockboxes and a waterlogged leather duffel bag.
Agent Hayes personally unzipped the bag. Inside was Claire’s personal leather portfolio, her missing engagement ring, and an audio dictaphone wrapped in waterproof plastic.
Hayes pressed the playback button on the small device. The speaker hissed with static before Claire’s steady, familiar voice filled the morning air:
"If you’re listening to this, Leo... or Mark... it means Vanessa found out I took the secondary ledgers. She threatened to hurt Ilaria if I didn't hand them over. I’m hiding the master backup in the floorboards under Ilaria’s dollhouse. Mark, if anything happens to me, protect our baby. She is the only thing that matters. I love you both more than life itself."
Hearing Claire’s voice after fourteen months of silence felt like a physical blow to my chest. Tears tracked through the grime and dried blood on my cheeks.
Ilaria reached up and touched my face, her small voice soft and remarkably clear. "Mommy loved us, Daddy. She didn't leave."

"She never left us, baby," I whispered back, burying my face in her shoulder. "She was fighting for us the whole time."
An agent walked up to Hayes with an evidence manifest. "Ma'am, state police just processed the Croft residence. Judge Croft attempted to board a chartered private flight to the Cayman Islands twenty minutes ago. He was arrested on the tarmac by the Marshals Service."
