Chapter 10 - The Freezing Depths

The cold hit me like a wall of concrete.

The shock knocked every breath of air from my lungs. The water was pitch-black, churning with weeds and dangerous undercurrents.

I kicked frantically, forcing my eyes open in the stinging, murky water.

Ten feet below me, the pale fabric of Ilaria’s jacket was sinking fast toward the lake bed.

I dove deeper, my chest burning as my muscles screamed against the sub-zero temperature. My fingers brushed the edge of her collar, slipped, and then caught the thick wool of her jacket.

I pulled her small, limp body against my chest. Her eyes were closed. Her lips were blue.

I kicked upward with every ounce of strength remaining in my body, fighting the drag of our soaked clothes and the heavy lake currents. The surface seemed miles away, a faint shimmer of storm-light through the dark.

My lungs felt like they were going to burst. Dark spots danced across my vision.

Not today, I told myself. You don't get to take her too.

With one final, desperate surge, my head broke the surface of the water.

I gasped in a mouthful of air and hauled Ilaria up onto the lower dock where Sarah was waiting with an outstretched hand.

"Take her!" I coughed violently, heaving my daughter onto the wooden planks.

Sarah pulled Ilaria up, immediately rolling her onto her side. "She's not breathing, Mark! She swallowed water!"

I scrambled out of the lake, collapsed on my knees beside my daughter, and began chest compressions.

One, two, three, four.

"Come on, Lari," I begged, tears mixing with the freezing lake water on my face. "Breathe, baby. Please. Daddy's here. Breathe!"

Five, six, seven, eight.

I tilted her chin and gave two rescue breaths into her tiny mouth.

Ilaria suddenly convulsed, coughing up a torrent of lake water. She let out a ragged, piercing wail that sounded like the sweetest music I had ever heard in my life.

I pulled her into my arms, holding her so tightly I could feel her fragile heartbeat drumming against my ribs.

Behind us, the sound of a gun cocking cut through the wind.
