Chapter 12 - The Federal Ledger

The flashing red and blue strobe lights cast long, erratic shadows across the rain-swept bluffs of Lake Moraine. Paramedics wrapped Ilaria in an insulated foil blanket, checking her vitals with calm, practiced efficiency while two federal agents stood guard outside the ambulance doors.
"Core temperature is climbing back to normal," the EMT announced, pressing a warm stethoscope to her chest. "Lungs are clear of fluid. She’s going to be okay, Mr. Miller."
Ilaria held my thumb in her tiny fist, refusing to let go even when they gave her a sip of warm electrolyte water. Her hazel eyes darted nervously around the ambulance interior until they locked onto mine. "Daddy, is the cold lady really gone?"
"She's gone, sweetie," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "Nobody can hurt us now."
Outside in the wind, Agent Hayes stepped into the back of the command van, motioning for me to join her. Leo was already inside, sitting on a metal bench with a bandage wrapped around his shoulder and an ice pack pressed to his swollen eye.
"You need to see this, Mark," Leo said, turning a tactical laptop screen toward me.
Agent Hayes adjusted her glasses. "While our tactical teams secured the marina, a federal warrant was executed on Judge Harlan Croft’s residence and the private vaults at Croft & Associates. We recovered three encrypted hard drives, six offshore bank accounts, and Claire’s original handwritten audit report."
On the screen was a scanned page in Claire’s neat, deliberate handwriting, dated five days before her death.
"Claire had traced thirty-four million dollars in missing municipal infrastructure funds directly into private accounts controlled by Vanessa and her father," Hayes explained. "They used shell companies to buy out distressed properties right along the projected high-speed rail corridor. When the state finalized the zoning, those properties would have yielded a five-hundred-percent return. Claire discovered the forged appraisal certificates bearing her counterfeit signature."
"That’s why Vanessa targeted me after Claire died," I said, the cold truth setting in with brutal clarity. "She didn't just want an alibi—she needed access to the Miller architectural archive to validate the land boundary surveys."
"Exactly," Hayes replied grimly. "If Vanessa married you, she gained full legal control over the historic parcels blocking their zoning permit. You were the final piece of their puzzle. When you started asking questions, and when little Ilaria started remembering the red coat, Vanessa panicked."
A radio on Hayes’s vest crackled to life with static.

"Command, this is Dive Unit 3," a diver’s voice broke through the speaker. "We’ve located the secondary vehicle submerged off the old pier. License plate matches the missing Croft fleet sedan. We’re preparing to run sonar on the trunk compartment."
Hayes grabbed her mic. "Copy that, Unit 3. Secure the perimeter and do not break the seal until forensic units arrive on site."
