Chapter 5 - The Unmasking

A murmur of confusion rippled through the sea of tuxedoed men and gowned women in the audience.
Victoria leaned in close to Richard’s ear, maintaining her smile for the press photographers. "Richard, what are you doing? Stick to the script."
Richard did not look at her. He pressed a button on the small presentation clicker in his palm.
The massive LED screen behind them flickered.
The corporate logo disappeared. In its place appeared a high-resolution split screen.
On the left side was a certified forensic audit report from the Federal Maritime Commission, displaying seventy-two million dollars in unauthorized offshore fund diversions from the Sterling Foundation accounts directly into Vance Development Holdings—signed with a forged digital authorization from Richard’s late wife’s trust.
A sharp gasp went up from the front row of investors. Arthur Vance dropped his scotch glass; it shattered on the marble floor with a loud crack.
"Richard!" Victoria gasped, her voice trembling with real panic now. She reached for the microphone. "Turn that off! What is this nonsense?"
"Don't touch the microphone, Victoria," Richard said. His voice was not loud, but it cut through the room like a steel blade.
He clicked the remote again.
The right side of the screen switched from financial documents to a video feed.
The room went dead silent.
It was the high-definition security footage from the East Wing nursery, captured from the redundant emergency camera installed inside the ceiling crown molding. The timestamp read 19:12 PM — Earlier Tonight.
On the screen, in crystal-clear 4K resolution, Victoria stood over two-year-old Maya.
The audience watched in horror as Victoria grabbed the terrified toddler by her ruffled collar, dragging her toward the dark closet.
The audio fed directly through the ballroom's concert-grade surround sound system:
"Stop crying, you little brat... Keep your mouth shut tonight. If you make one sound during the gala, you spend the entire night in this dark box. Cold cloth on your face until you learn manners."
On the screen, Victoria took a freezing wet washcloth from the ice bucket and pressed it firmly over the sobbing child’s face to stifle her screams before shoving her into the pitch-black vault and slamming the steel door.
Screams of outrage and disgust erupted across the ballroom.
Senator Bradley stood up, his face red with fury. Several women in the front row turned away from the screen in tears. The media photographers began snapping photos furiously, camera flashes illuminating Victoria’s pale, frozen face in blinding bursts of white light.
"That's fake!" Victoria screamed, losing all composure. Her voice shrieked through the ballroom, stripping away every ounce of aristocratic poise. "That's deepfake technology! Richard, you're insane! You fabricated this to ruin my family!"
"The footage is timestamped, digitally signed, and already uploaded to the Nassau County District Attorney's server," Richard said into the mic, his eyes burning into hers. "And so is the trace on the offshore accounts your father used to launder money out of my daughter's inheritance."

Victoria lunged toward the stairs to flee the stage, but the double oak doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.
A dozen armed state troopers and private estate security guards, led by Marcus, entered the room, clearing a path directly toward the stage.
