Chapter 10 - The Ambush at the Gates

The private jet tore through the storm clouds back toward Long Island. Richard sat in the cabin, his hands gripping the armrests so hard the leather groaned.
On the video link on his laptop, Marcus had patched into the estate’s front gate security feed.
Three black luxury SUVs were parked horizontally across the entrance of the Westbury estate, blocking the driveway. A tall man in an expensive grey three-piece suit—Julian Kane, Manhattan's most ruthless family law attorney—stood at the intercom column holding a blue-backed legal folder, accompanied by two armed private security guards and a county sheriff’s deputy who looked deeply uncomfortable.
"Open the gate immediately, Mrs. Gable!" Kane’s amplified voice crackled through the intercom. "I have a signed Emergency Temporary Custody Order from the New York State Supreme Court, Family Division! Under the terms of the pre-nuptial agreement and marital residence clause, Mrs. Victoria Vance Sterling remains the legal joint guardian of Maya Sterling pending formal trial. If you do not surrender the child to court-appointed protective services within five minutes, you will be arrested for felony custodial interference!"
Inside the control annex, Mrs. Gable stood trembling, Maya clutched tightly in her arms. Maya was crying softly, sensing the rising panic, her little face buried in the nanny's neck.
"Mr. Sterling isn't here!" Martha shouted through the speaker. "You have no right to enter this property!"
"I have the county sheriff with me, ma'am!" Kane sneered, waving the document at the security camera. "The order overrides estate authority. Open the gate, or we will breach the service access."
On the jet, Richard adjusted his headset. "Marcus, bypass the local grid. Shut down the perimeter power gates and drop the hydraulic anti-ram bollards."
"Done," Marcus said, his fingers flying across the tactical keyboard.
With a loud hydraulic hiss, four massive steel pillars rose twelve inches out of the asphalt driveway, completely sealing off the entrance.
"Kane!" Richard's voice boomed directly through the gate’s high-power loudspeaker system from the jet's comm link.
The attorney paused, looking up at the high-mount camera. "Mr. Sterling? I suggest you order your staff to comply. Judge Thornton signed this order twenty minutes ago. As Victoria’s legal representative, I have full custody authorization while she is held on contested bail."
"Judge Thornton's son received a two-million-dollar non-recourse loan from Vance Holdings' Cayman account last spring," Richard said, his voice flat, icy, and lethal. "At this exact second, federal agents are executing a search warrant on Thornton's chambers in White Plains."
Kane’s smug expression vanished. His jaw dropped.
"And Kane?" Richard added, his voice dropping into a dark, razor-sharp whisper. "If one of your men takes a single step across that iron property line before my wheels touch the runway, I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a federal penitentiary sharing a cell with Arthur Vance. Get off my land."

The sheriff’s deputy took two steps back, looked at Kane, shook his head, and immediately walked back to his squad car.
Kane stood frozen for three seconds, his face pale as chalk, before scrambling into his SUV and speeding away into the rain.
