Chapter 15 - Where the Light Stays

On a warm afternoon in late May, Richard and Maya stood on the gentle green hill of the Oakwood Memorial Park in Cold Spring Harbor.
The grass was dotted with wild daisies. In front of them stood a simple, elegant headstone of white granite, surrounded by blooming lavender:
ELEANOR STERLING
Beloved Wife and Mother
Your light shines forever in the daughter you gave us.
Maya knelt down on the grass, holding a small bouquet of yellow roses she had picked from the estate garden that morning. She laid them carefully at the base of the stone.
"For Mama," Maya said softly, looking up at the sky.
Richard knelt beside her, placing a comforting arm around her shoulders.
"She loves them, sweetheart," Richard said, feeling a deep, serene peace settle over his heart. The pain of Eleanor’s loss was still there—it would always be there—but it was no longer shadowed by guilt or betrayal. The truth had set them free.
Maya leaned against his side, wrapping her small hand around Richard’s thumb.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, baby girl?"
"We go home and eat pancakes?"
Richard smiled, a real, full smile that reached all the way to his eyes. He lifted his daughter into his arms, feeling her warm cheek press against his neck.
"Yeah, Maya," Richard said, looking toward the horizon where the sun was shining bright and clear. "We're going home to make pancakes."

As they walked down the green hill toward the car, side by side in the golden light of the afternoon, there were no dark rooms. There were no cold shadows.
There was only a father, a daughter, and a lifetime of light ahead.
