Chapter 14 - A Clean Slate

By spring, the Westbury estate had undergone a complete transformation.

The cold, imposing Italian marble in the residential wing had been replaced with warm, wide-plank oak flooring. The dark velvet drapes had been torn down, replaced by sheer linen that let the morning sunlight flood every hallway.

The east wing nursery was no more. In its place stood a sunlit art studio and playroom, filled with easels, finger paints, miniature tables, and floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the blooming gardens.

Outside on the back terrace, Mrs. Gable set down a tray of fresh lemonade and homemade oatmeal cookies.

"The board of directors meeting was rescheduled for Thursday, Mr. Sterling," Mrs. Gable said with a warm smile. "Marcus told them you were unavailable on Tuesday afternoons."

"Tuesday afternoons are reserved," Richard said, stepping onto the terrace in a casual grey sweater and jeans—the tailored suits having been relegated to the back of his closet.

Down on the grass, Marcus was throwing a tennis ball for his German Shepherd, while Maya ran after the dog, squealing with laughter as the gentle animal dropped the ball right at her feet.

Richard walked down the stone steps onto the lawn. Maya saw him, scooped up the tennis ball with both hands, and ran toward him as fast as her little legs could carry her.

"Daddy! Throw ball!" she shouted, thrusting the slobbery ball into his hands.

Richard laughed, tossing the ball across the green field and watching the dog sprint after it with Maya cheering behind.
