Chapter 8 - THE SAFE HOUSE

Twelve hours later, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, golden morning over the Hudson Valley.
The Blackwood estate was crawling with forensic teams, federal investigators, and private cleanup crews. Realizing that the main mansion was no longer a safe haven, Victor moved Lily, Ethan, and Martha to his private, fortified safe house nestled in the dense pine forests of Upstate New York.
The safe house was a stunning glass-and-timber modern lodge, completely invisible from public satellite maps and guarded by twenty-four-hour biometric security.
In the sunlit living room, Lily sat on an oversized plush sofa, wearing a warm cream-colored cashmere sweater Martha had given her. Her left arm was cleanly bandaged, and the bruising on her cheek was beginning to fade.
On the soft wool rug in front of her, Ethan was sitting up, happily chewing on a silicone teething ring with his uninjured hand, his little cast resting comfortably in a soft sling.
“He looks so much better,” Lily said softly, smiling as Ethan let out a tiny, joyful babble.
Martha walked over with a tray of hot chamomile tea and fresh scones. “That boy knows he’s safe now, Lily. Children have an instinct for these things. He knows who truly loves him.”
The heavy oak front door opened quietly, and Victor stepped into the room.
He had shed his sharp business suit for dark jeans and a simple black charcoal sweater. He looked exhausted, the shadows under his eyes telling the story of an entire night spent dismantling an empire, but his posture was upright, solid, and commanding.
“How is he doing?” Victor asked, walking straight to the sofa and crouching beside Ethan.
Ethan immediately dropped his toy, giggling and reaching his good hand out to grab Victor’s thumb. A rare, genuine smile touched Victor’s lips as he gently lifted his son and kissed his forehead.
“Dr. Hayes checked the fracture this morning,” Lily replied. “He said the bone is setting perfectly. And the blood tests came back completely clean—the sedatives are out of his system.”
Victor let out a long, slow breath of pure relief. “Thank God.”
He set Ethan down surrounded by pillows and turned to Lily, sitting down on the edge of the coffee table across from her.
“Senator Vance’s bail was denied two hours ago,” Victor said, his tone businesslike yet deeply personal. “The Department of Justice hit him with forty-two felony counts, including conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and high treason. Vance Global declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy at 8:00 AM. Their assets have been seized by the federal government.”
“And Serena?” Lily asked hesitantly.
Victor’s eyes hardened slightly. “Serena is being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. The toxicology reports from Claire’s exhumation matched the exact chemical batches purchased through Serena’s offshore accounts. She will spend the rest of her natural life in a maximum-security state penitentiary.”
Lily let out a quiet breath, looking down at her cup of tea. “It’s finally over.”
“For them, it is,” Victor said softly.
He reached across the small distance between them and gently took Lily’s hand. Lily looked up, startled by the warmth of his touch.
“Lily, Claire’s digital will had a second file,” Victor said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur. “One that was encrypted until Serena was officially taken into custody.”
Lily’s heart skipped a beat. “What was in it?”

Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, handwritten letter on Claire’s signature floral stationery.
“Claire wrote this for you,” Victor said, placing the letter into Lily’s hands. “She wanted you to read it when the storm passed.”
