Chapter 6 - THE ROOFTOP STANDOFF

The torrential rain slammed against the concrete surface of the Blackwood helipad. The roar of the twin-engine Sikorsky helicopter blades whipped the cold night air into a deafening frenzy, kicking up mist that blurred the city skyline in the distance.
Victor emerged onto the roof, stepping through the heavy steel fire door.
In his left hand, he held Serena by the collar of her silk shirt, a pistol pressed firmly against the small of her back. Serena was sobbing, her designer shoes gone, her bare feet scraping against the wet gravel.
Standing fifty feet away, illuminated by the floodlights of the idling helicopter, was Senator Arthur Vance.
The sixty-year-old politician looked entirely composed in his bespoke navy wool trench coat, holding an umbrella in one hand. But beside him, held at gunpoint by three heavily armed private contractors, were Lily and Ethan.
Lily was bleeding from her lip, her hands tied behind her back, but she stood firmly in front of the baby, who was strapped into a secure transport carrier resting on the wet deck.
“Let them go, Arthur,” Victor yelled over the scream of the rotor blades. “The DOJ has your offshore accounts. Your political career is over. The FBI is raiding your townhouse right now.”
Senator Vance let out a dry, theatrical laugh that was lost in the wind.
“Do you really think a few leaked spreadsheets can tear down forty years of political dynasty, Victor?” the Senator shouted back, stepping forward. “The media prints what I tell them to print. The judges rule how I tell them to rule. You are a brilliant businessman, but you don’t understand how this country actually works.”
“I understand you poisoned Claire,” Victor said, stepping forward, dragging Serena with him. “And I understand your daughter broke my son’s arm.”
Arthur Vance didn’t even look at his daughter. “Serena was sloppy. Claire was supposed to die quietly after childbirth so no one would ever suspect anything. But my daughter let her personal jealousy get the better of her.”
Serena looked up at her father in sheer disbelief. “Dad… what are you saying? I did this for our family! I did this to save your company!”
“You did it because you’re weak, Serena,” the Senator said coldly, his voice devoid of any paternal warmth. “And now you’ve compromised my entire operation.”
Senator Vance turned his attention back to Victor.
“Here is the deal, Blackwood. You sign over the operational control of Blackwood Industrial Patents to my offshore holding company. You deliver the original drive containing Claire’s fabricated video. In exchange, I take Serena and leave the country. You get your nanny and your brat back alive.”
“And if I refuse?” Victor asked, his finger tightening imperceptibly on the trigger behind Serena’s back.
Arthur Vance drew a silver revolver from his coat pocket and pointed it directly at Lily’s forehead.
“If you refuse, I execute the girl, I take the boy, and you spend the rest of your miserable life wondering where on this earth your son is growing up.”
Lily looked across the wet roof directly into Victor’s eyes. Despite the gun pointed at her face, there was no fear in her expression—only pure, fierce determination.
“Don’t do it, Victor!” Lily shouted over the storm. “Don’t give him anything! He will kill Ethan the second he gets what he wants!”
“Shut up, girl!” one of the contractors barked, striking Lily across the shoulders with the butt of his rifle. Lily stumbled to her knees, but kept her body angled over Ethan’s carrier.
Victor’s eyes locked onto Lily’s. In that fraction of a second, an unspoken understanding passed between them.
Victor slowly raised his right hand, showing his empty palm.
“Alright, Arthur,” Victor said, raising his voice. “You win. Take Serena. Let the girl and Ethan step across the line.”
The Senator smiled, a sinister, triumphant grin. “Smart man, Victor. Bring her forward.”
Victor shoved Serena forward. She stumbled across the wet tarmac toward her father, crying out in relief. “Dad, thank God—”
“Wait,” Victor called out sharply.
Arthur Vance paused, frowning. “What?”
Victor reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small black remote with a single green toggle switch.
“Did you really think I didn’t know which security contractor you hired for this raid?” Victor asked, his voice cutting through the roar of the engines like thunder.
Arthur Vance’s face froze.
Victor flicked the switch.

Suddenly, the floodlights illuminating the helicopter snapped to full, blinding intensity, swiveling downward and shining directly into the eyes of the Senator and his mercenaries. From the perimeter ledges of the roof, eight snipers in Blackwood tactical gear rose from the shadows, laser sights painting crimson dots across the chests of every single mercenary on the helipad.
“Drop your weapons,” a booming voice echoed over a tactical loudspeaker. “This is the Federal Special Operations Division. You are completely surrounded.”
