Chapter 11 - HOUSE OF SHADOWS

The lights inside the safe house instantly cut out as Victor engaged the black-out protocol. Only the faint, silver moonlight filtering through the floor-to-ceiling panoramic glass illuminated the vast living room.
“Stay behind the kitchen island,” Victor commanded in a low whisper, his eyes scanning the perimeter. “She’s not alone. If she made it here, Arthur’s remaining loyalists are backing her play.”
As if on cue, the glass wall shattered with an explosive, deafening roar.
Two smoke grenades clattered across the polished timber floor, hissing thick, blinding gray fog into the living room.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
A barrage of heavy-caliber buckshot tore through the wooden pillars and shredded the leather furniture. Splinters and debris rained down as Serena stepped through the broken frame, firing wildly into the dark.
“Where are you, Victor?!” Serena screamed, her voice bouncing crazily off the high vaulted ceilings. “Where is that little orphan whore?! Did you think you could lock me away in a cage like an animal?!”
Behind her, two heavily armed men in dark tactical gear moved through the smoke, their weapon lights cutting through the haze.
Victor didn't wait.
Emerging from the shadow behind a massive stone fireplace, Victor fired two rapid shots from his tactical shotgun. The lead mercenary was lifted off his feet by the force of the blast, crashing down onto the shattered glass.
The second mercenary swiveled to return fire, but Victor ducked behind the stone hearth as a hail of bullets chipped away the masonry.
“Kill him!” Serena shrieked, racking another shell into her shotgun. “Kill him and find the baby!”
From her crouched position behind the marble kitchen island, Lily saw the second mercenary advancing on Victor’s flank, lining up a clean shot while Victor was pinned behind the chimney.
Her hands were shaking. Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
“You possess a rare, pure heart… but you must fight for my child.” Claire’s words echoed in Lily’s mind with crystal clarity.
Lily stood up, braced her hands against the marble counter, raised the 9mm pistol, and pulled the trigger.
BANG.
The bullet struck the mercenary’s shoulder, knocking his aim completely off course. His rifle discharged into the ceiling, showering sparks from the electrical wiring.
Victor instantly seized the opening, pivoting around the stone pillar and taking down the second mercenary with a single, precise shot.
“Lily!” Serena’s head snapped toward the kitchen island. Her eyes locked onto Lily through the thinning smoke. A horrific, bloodthirsty grin spread across Serena’s face.
“You,” Serena hissed. “You ruined everything!”
Serena raised her shotgun and charged straight toward the kitchen counter.
Lily ducked as a blast tore through the upper cabinets, sending fine china and shattered glass cascading down around her. Serena vaulted over the counter with the wild, desperate energy of a maniac, slamming Lily against the wall and knocking the pistol from her hand.
Serena wrapped her blood-stained fingers around Lily’s throat, pressing her back against the granite counter with terrifying strength.
“You took my husband! You took my fortune! You took my life!” Serena choked out, her face inches from Lily’s, saliva spraying from her lips.
Lily gasped for air, clawing at Serena’s wrists. “You… killed Claire… you monster!”
“And I’ll kill you too!” Serena snarled, reaching for a heavy chef’s knife resting on the magnetic strip above the counter. “And then I’ll find that crying brat and throw him off the balcony!”

Before Serena’s hand could touch the blade, a massive hand clamped down on her wrist with enough force to shatter the joint.
Victor Blackwood was standing behind her.
