Chapter 13 - NEW FOUNDATIONS

Six months later.
The Blackwood mansion in the city had been completely remodeled. The cold, austere marble that once echoed with Serena’s cruel commands had been replaced with warm, honey-toned French oak floors and bright, sunlit rooms filled with fresh flowers.
In the newly expanded backyard, the afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across a pristine green lawn.
Twenty-month-old Ethan—completely healed, vibrant, and full of boundless energy—was toddling across the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Victor had brought home for his birthday. His bright, infectious laughter filled the warm summer air.
Sitting on a white wooden garden bench beneath a blooming wisteria arbor, Lily watched him with a radiant smile.
She was wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green summer dress. Her hair fell in soft, natural waves over her shoulders, and her skin had the healthy, glowing vitality of someone who was truly loved and cherished.
Beside her, Victor sat with his arm draped comfortably behind her on the back of the bench.
He looked ten years younger. The severe, brooding darkness that had once defined him had melted away, replaced by a quiet, grounded peace. His eyes never left the sight of his son playing in the grass.
“He’s getting faster every day,” Victor remarked, a warm smile touching his lips. “Marcus told me this morning that Ethan almost outran him in the foyer.”
Lily chuckled softly. “That’s because Marcus was trying to put his shoes on. Ethan has decided that shoes are entirely optional in this house.”
Victor turned his head, looking at Lily with deep, unspoken adoration.
Over the past six months, the world had dramatically transformed. Senator Arthur Vance had been sentenced to three consecutive life terms at ADX Florence without the possibility of parole. Serena Vance had received a life sentence without parole at a federal correctional facility in Texas, spending twenty-three hours a day in solitary confinement.
The Vance empire was erased from existence.
In its place, Victor and Lily had co-founded The Claire Blackwood Foundation for Protected Children, an international non-profit dedicated to rescuing and supporting abused children and providing legal aid for domestic workers. Lily had been appointed the executive director, managing an endowment of over one hundred million dollars with grace, intelligence, and fierce compassion.
“You received another letter from the Governor’s office today,” Victor mentioned, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind Lily’s ear. “They want you to keynote the annual humanitarian summit next month.”
Lily blushed slightly, leaning into his touch. “I’m still getting used to speaking in front of hundreds of people. A year ago, I was terrified to speak above a whisper.”
“You have the strongest voice I’ve ever known, Lily,” Victor said softly, his fingers lingering against her cheek. “You spoke up when everyone else was silent. You saved Ethan. And you saved me.”
Ethan suddenly came running toward the bench, clutching a brightly colored rubber ball in his tiny hands.
“Mama! Look!” Ethan shouted proudly, tumbling into Lily’s lap with pure, uninhibited joy.
Lily’s heart swelled to bursting. She wrapped her arms around the little boy, lifting him up and kissing his chubby cheeks as he giggled uncontrollably.
Victor watched them, his chest tightening with an emotion so powerful it took his breath away.
“Mama,” Victor repeated quietly, a deep, knowing look in his eyes.
Lily looked up, her cheeks flushing a delicate shade of pink. “He started saying it last week. I… I didn’t know if you’d be comfortable with it.”
May you like
Victor reached over and took both of their hands into his own massive, protective palm.
“There is no one else on this earth who deserves that title more than you,” Victor said with absolute certainty.
