Chapter 7 - SOPHIA'S LAST NIGHT

They didn't go alone.
Lorenzo didn't care what the note demanded.
Hunter went too.
The address led them to an abandoned maternity clinic in Brooklyn.
The place had closed twelve years earlier.
Hunter entered behind Lorenzo.
Old bassinets lined the hallway.
Dust covered everything.
Then a projector turned on.
Sophia appeared on the wall.
Hunter gasped.
Lorenzo stopped breathing.
It was a recording.
Sophia was pregnant.
Alive.
Scared.
"If you're watching this, I probably failed."
Lorenzo's face broke.
Sophia continued.
"Marco knows I'm trying to leave."
"But Marco isn't the person I'm most afraid of."
Hunter looked at Lorenzo.
Sophia swallowed.
"Someone in the family knows about Hunter."
"Someone who knew Rebecca."
"Someone who knows why my father kept two families."
The video flickered.
Then stopped.
A woman's voice came from behind them.
"She always was dramatic."
Lorenzo turned.
His mother stood in the doorway.
Isabella Rossi.
Hunter stared.
Isabella looked at her.
Then smiled.
"You have Rebecca's eyes."
Lorenzo's gun rose.
"Mother?"
Isabella sighed.
"Put that away."
"Did you know Hunter?"
"I knew of her."
"Did you know Marco was watching her?"
"Yes."
Hunter stepped forward.
"Did you tell him to?"
Isabella looked at her.
"No."
"Then who did?"
Isabella's expression changed.
"Your mother."
Hunter froze.
"What?"
"Rebecca wasn't hiding from the Rossi family."
Isabella said.
"She was hiding from Marco."
"Why?"
"Because Marco wasn't simply Lorenzo's friend."
Isabella looked at her son.
"He was Vincent Lane's illegitimate son."
Lorenzo stared.
Hunter's stomach dropped.
Sophia.
Hunter.
Marco.
All children of the same father.
May you like
Marco hadn't been destroying strangers.
He had been eliminating his own family.
