Chapter 4 - THE DAUGHTER REBECCA HID
The fire uncovered something nobody expected.
A hidden compartment inside Sophia's wall.
Inside were three envelopes.
One was addressed to Lorenzo.
One to Leo.
And one to Hunter Vance.
Hunter stared at her name.
Sophia had known.
Not guessed.
Known.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Dear Hunter,
If this reaches you before I do, I'm sorry.
You don't know me.
But I know about you.
Our father was named Vincent Lane.
Rebecca was your mother.
Elena was mine.
That makes us sisters.
Hunter stopped reading.
Her knees weakened.
Lorenzo caught her.
"No."
She whispered.
"No."
Lorenzo held her.
Hunter looked at Sophia's portrait across the room.
The elegant woman she'd seen in newspapers.
The dead wife of Lorenzo Rossi.
The mother of the baby in her arms.
"My sister?"
Lorenzo said nothing.
Hunter continued reading.
Sophia had discovered the truth during her pregnancy.
Their father had lived two lives.
Rebecca discovered the other family and disappeared with Hunter.
Sophia spent months trying to find them.
Then she finally located Hunter.
But before she could contact her, she learned something else.
Someone inside the Rossi organization had been monitoring Hunter too.
The letter ended with a warning.
I don't know who.
I only know they are afraid of what Rebecca knew.
Hunter lowered the page.
"What did my mother know?"
Lorenzo's phone rang.
Marco.
"Boss."
"Where are you?"
"Queens."
"Why?"
A pause.
"Because we found Tommy Vance."
Hunter froze.
Lorenzo looked at her.
"Who?"
"Her boyfriend."
"Ex-boyfriend."
Hunter whispered.
Marco continued.
"He was trying to leave the city."
Lorenzo looked at Hunter.
"Why does that matter?"
Marco's answer made Hunter's blood run cold.
