Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO KILLED LILY

Tommy entered the Rossi basement in handcuffs.
Hunter hadn't seen him since the hospital.
He looked thinner.
Meaner.
When he saw her, he smiled.
"Hey, baby."
Lorenzo punched him before Hunter could react.
Tommy hit the floor.
"Don't call her that."
Hunter stared at Lorenzo.
Then at Tommy.
"Why did you have Sophia's money?"
Tommy wiped blood from his mouth.
"I don't know any Sophia."
Lorenzo showed him the cash.
Tommy's eyes betrayed him.
Hunter saw it.
"You knew her."
"No."
"You knew my sister."
Tommy laughed nervously.
"Your what?"
Hunter stepped closer.
"Why did you push me?"
Tommy's smile disappeared.
"You know why."
"You wanted my savings."
"Yeah."
"Was that really why?"
Silence.
Hunter's heart began pounding.
"Tommy."
He looked away.
"Was somebody paying you?"
His face changed.
Hunter stopped breathing.
"Oh my God."
Tommy stood.
"Hunter—"
She slapped him.
"Who?"
"I didn't mean for the baby to die."
Hunter slapped him again.
"WHO?"
Tommy began crying.
"A man called me."
"What man?"
"I never got his name."
"He said you were trying to meet some rich woman."
"He told me to keep you home."
"Scare you."
"Take your phone."
"I was drunk."
"You fought me."
"You fell."
Hunter couldn't hear anything after that.
Lily hadn't died because of one drunken argument.
Someone had been watching Hunter.
Someone had been terrified she would meet Sophia.
Lorenzo caught Hunter as her knees gave way.
Tommy continued.
"The guy said if I kept Hunter away from the Rossi family, he'd clear my debts."
Lorenzo looked at him.
"Did you recognize his voice?"
"No."
"Think carefully."
Tommy shook his head.
Then stopped.
"He had a watch."
Hunter frowned.
"What?"
"The night he gave me the first payment."
"He wore this weird old watch."
"Gold."
"Black face."
"Cracked glass."
Lorenzo went completely still.
Hunter saw it.
"You know that watch."
Lorenzo looked toward the basement door.
Marco stood there.
And on Marco Bellini's wrist was an antique gold watch.
May you like
With a black face.
And cracked glass.
